What is Switchboard?
Switchboard (SBT) is a decentralized oracle network launched in 2021, designed to facilitate the secure and reliable transfer of off-chain data to on-chain smart contracts. The project addresses the critical need for real-world data in blockchain applications, enabling developers to create more robust decentralized applications (dApps) that require external information, such as price feeds, event outcomes, and other data points. Switchboard operates on the Solana blockchain, leveraging its high throughput and low latency to provide efficient data services. The network utilizes a decentralized model where multiple data providers contribute information, ensuring accuracy and reducing the risk of single points of failure. Its native token, SBT, serves multiple purposes, including paying for data services, incentivizing data providers, and participating in governance decisions within the network. Switchboard stands out for its focus on providing a flexible and customizable oracle solution, allowing developers to tailor data feeds to their specific needs. This adaptability, combined with its integration capabilities with various blockchain ecosystems, positions Switchboard as a significant player in the decentralized finance (DeFi) and broader blockchain landscape.
When and how did Switchboard start?
Switchboard originated in June 2021 when the founding team released its whitepaper, outlining the project's vision and technical framework. Who is Switchboard designed for?
Switchboard is designed for developers and institutions, enabling them to build and integrate decentralized applications that require reliable data feeds. It provides essential tools and resources, including SDKs and APIs, to facilitate the development and usage of these applications. By offering a robust infrastructure for accessing off-chain data, Switchboard supports developers in creating innovative solutions that leverage real-world information. Secondary participants, such as validators and liquidity providers, engage with the platform through staking and governance mechanisms, contributing to the overall security and functionality of the ecosystem. This collaborative environment allows for a diverse range of applications and services to flourish, ultimately enhancing the utility and reach of the Switchboard network.
How is Switchboard secured?
Switchboard utilizes a decentralized oracle network secured through a combination of cryptographic techniques and incentive mechanisms. The protocol employs a consensus mechanism that relies on a network of validators who confirm transactions and ensure the integrity of data provided to smart contracts. This consensus model enhances transaction finality and reduces the risk of data manipulation. For authentication and data integrity, Switchboard leverages advanced cryptographic primitives, such as ECDSA (Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm), which ensures that data transmitted across the network is secure and verifiable. The network's architecture is designed to align participant incentives through staking rewards, where validators earn rewards for their contributions to the network's security and functionality. Additionally, Switchboard implements slashing mechanisms to penalize malicious behavior, thereby discouraging attempts to compromise the network. The protocol is further fortified by regular audits and governance processes that enhance its resilience against vulnerabilities. Multi-client diversity also plays a crucial role in ensuring that the network remains robust and secure against potential attacks.
Has Switchboard faced any controversy or risks?
Switchboard has faced risks primarily related to its role as an oracle service within the blockchain ecosystem. As oracles are critical for connecting smart contracts with real-world data, they are inherently exposed to various technical vulnerabilities, including potential exploits that could compromise data integrity. In early 2023, Switchboard experienced a minor incident where a data feed was temporarily disrupted due to a configuration error, which raised concerns about the reliability of its services. The team responded promptly by implementing a patch to rectify the configuration issue and conducted a thorough audit of their systems to enhance security measures. Additionally, they initiated a bug bounty program to encourage community participation in identifying vulnerabilities. Ongoing risks for Switchboard include market volatility and regulatory scrutiny, which are common in the blockchain space. To mitigate these risks, the project emphasizes transparency in its operations and maintains regular audits to ensure the robustness of its infrastructure.

What is Market depth?
Market depth is a metric, which is showing the real liquidity of the markets. Due to rampant wash-trading and fake activity - volume currently isn't the most reliable indicator in the crypto space.
What is it measuring?
It's measuring 1% or 10% section of the order book from the midpoint price (1%/10% of the buy orders, and 1%/10% of the sell orders).

Why it is important to use only 1% or 10%?
It's important, because measurement of the whole order book is going to give false results due to extreme values, which can make false illusion of liquidity for a given market.
How to use it?
By default Market depth is showing the most liquid markets sorted by Combined Orders (which is a sum of buy and sell orders). This way it provides the most interesting information already. Left (green) side of the market depth bar is showing how many buy orders are open, and right (red) side of the bar is showing how many sell orders are open (both can be recalculated to BTC, ETH or any fiat we have available on the site).

Confidence
Due to rampant malicious practices in the crypto exchanges environment, we have introduced in 2019 and 2020 new ways of evaluating exchanges and one of them is - Confidence. Because it's a new metric - it's essential to know how it works.
Confidence is weighted based on 3 principles:
Based on the liquidity from order books (75%) - including overall liquidity and market depth/volume ratio, volumes included, if exchange is low volume (below 2M USD volume 24h)
Based on web traffic (20%) - using Alexa rank as a main indicator of site popularity
Based on regulation (5%) - researching and evaluating licensing for exchange - by respective institutions
Adding all of these subscores give overall main result - Confidence
Confidence is mainly based on liquidity, because it's the most important aspect of cryptocurrency exchanges. Without liquidity there is no trading, illiquid markets tend to collapse in the long term. Besides liquidity - there is also an additional factor in calculation of score - market depth/volume ratio. If volume is huge (especially when it’s growing much faster than liquidity), and market depth seems to not keep pace with - it's reducing overall score. Exchanges that keep market makers liquidity with expanding volume are those that keep all ratios in-tact and have overall score above 75-80% (it means that they have all liquidity ratios above minimum requirements, high web traffic participation, and are often regulated).
