Lagarde weighs early ECB exit as digital euro work advances

Reports of Lagarde’s early exit

Several news outlets report that Christine Lagarde is considering leaving the European Central Bank before her term ends in October 2027. These reports describe plans for an early resignation based on information from unnamed political and central bank sources. The European Central Bank has not announced any resignation decision and states that Lagarde remains focused on her current mandate. Coverage therefore treats the possible exit as a reported scenario rather than a confirmed institutional decision.

Political timing around succession choice

Reports link the potential early departure to the 2027 French presidential election. They state that French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Merz want to agree on Lagarde’s successor before that vote. This timing would let both governments shape leadership at the European Central Bank in advance of national political changes. The explanation comes from anonymous sources and is not presented as an official position of Lagarde or the central bank.

Digital euro project enters new phase

The European Central Bank describes the digital euro as a central bank digital currency for the euro area. Official communications state that the project moved to a “next phase” in October 2023, with a preparation period planned to last two years. Later updates in October 2025 and December 2025 explain that technical and design work is largely complete. Further progress now depends on legislation from the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union.

Design goals for future digital euro

Lagarde describes the digital euro as a digital form of cash that will exist alongside banknotes. She states that it should be free to use for everyday digital payments and accepted across the euro area. She also stresses strong privacy protections and says the central bank will not access personal data by design. A February 2026 speech adds that the digital euro should support offline, cash-like payments while cash itself remains available.
