DeFi (DEFI )
What is DeFi?
DeFi (Decentralized Finance) is a category of cryptocurrency and blockchain projects that emerged to provide financial services without traditional intermediaries like banks. It aims to create an open financial system accessible to anyone with an internet connection, enabling users to lend, borrow, trade, and earn interest on their assets. DeFi operates primarily on public blockchains, most notably Ethereum, which supports smart contracts—self-executing contracts with the terms directly written into code. This technology allows for the automation of complex financial transactions and the creation of decentralized applications (dApps) that facilitate various financial services. The native tokens associated with DeFi projects often serve multiple roles, including governance, where holders can vote on protocol changes; utility, for transaction fees; and staking, which can provide rewards to users who lock their tokens in the network. DeFi stands out for its emphasis on transparency, security, and programmability, positioning it as a transformative force in the financial sector by enabling peer-to-peer transactions and reducing reliance on centralized institutions.
When and how did DeFi start?
DeFi originated in 2017 when the Ethereum blockchain provided the necessary infrastructure for decentralized finance applications. The term "DeFi" began to gain traction around this time, particularly with the launch of the MakerDAO project, which introduced a decentralized stablecoin, DAI, in December 2017. This marked a significant milestone in the DeFi movement, as it showcased the potential for financial services to operate without traditional intermediaries. In 2018, several key projects emerged, including Compound and Uniswap, which further developed the DeFi ecosystem by enabling lending, borrowing, and decentralized exchanges. The initial distribution of tokens for many of these projects often occurred through mechanisms like initial coin offerings (ICOs) or liquidity mining, which incentivized early adopters and users. The DeFi landscape saw significant growth in 2020, with the launch of various platforms and protocols that expanded the range of financial services available on the blockchain. This period marked the transition from experimental projects to a more robust ecosystem, laying the groundwork for the ongoing evolution of decentralized finance.
What’s coming up for DeFi?
According to official updates, DeFi is preparing for several significant milestones in the near future. One of the key upgrades is the implementation of the next version of its protocol, scheduled for Q1 2024, which aims to enhance scalability and transaction efficiency. Additionally, there are plans for a major integration with a leading Layer 2 solution, targeted for Q2 2024, to improve user experience and reduce gas fees. Governance decisions are also on the horizon, with a community vote planned for Q3 2024 to determine the future direction of the protocol's development and potential partnerships. These initiatives are designed to bolster the ecosystem's performance and accessibility, ensuring that DeFi remains competitive and relevant in the evolving landscape of decentralized finance. Progress on these milestones will be tracked through the official roadmap and community channels.
What makes DeFi stand out?
DeFi distinguishes itself through its decentralized architecture, which eliminates intermediaries and allows for peer-to-peer transactions. This design enables greater transparency and accessibility, as users can interact directly with smart contracts on various blockchains, primarily Ethereum, but increasingly on others like Binance Smart Chain and Solana. The ecosystem incorporates unique mechanisms such as automated market makers (AMMs) and liquidity pools, which facilitate seamless trading and lending without traditional order books. Additionally, DeFi platforms often utilize innovative governance models, allowing token holders to participate in decision-making processes, thereby enhancing community engagement and ownership. Interoperability is another key feature, with many DeFi projects focusing on cross-chain capabilities that enable assets and data to move freely across different blockchain networks. This fosters a more connected and versatile financial ecosystem. Furthermore, partnerships with various blockchain projects and integrations with traditional finance tools enhance the overall utility and reach of DeFi applications, solidifying its distinct role in the evolving financial landscape.
What can you do with DeFi?
DeFi enables a wide range of financial activities and services that are decentralized and accessible to anyone with an internet connection. Users can engage in lending and borrowing, where they can lend their assets to earn interest or borrow assets by providing collateral. Additionally, DeFi platforms often allow users to trade cryptocurrencies directly through decentralized exchanges (DEXs), eliminating the need for intermediaries. Holders of DeFi tokens can participate in governance, voting on proposals that influence the direction of the protocol. Many DeFi projects also offer staking options, where users can lock up their tokens to help secure the network and, in some cases, earn rewards. Developers leverage DeFi protocols to create decentralized applications (dApps) that can provide various financial services, such as yield farming, liquidity pools, and insurance products. The ecosystem is supported by a variety of wallets, bridges, and marketplaces that facilitate transactions and interactions with DeFi services, enhancing the overall user experience and accessibility of decentralized finance.
Is DeFi still active or relevant?
DeFi remains active and relevant as of October 2023, evidenced by several recent developments and ongoing governance activities. Notably, various DeFi protocols have announced significant upgrades and new features aimed at enhancing user experience and security. For instance, in September 2023, a major DeFi platform released a new version that improved transaction efficiency and reduced gas fees, reflecting a commitment to continuous improvement. Moreover, DeFi projects are actively engaging their communities through governance proposals, with multiple votes occurring monthly that shape the future direction of these platforms. This participatory approach not only fosters community involvement but also ensures that the projects remain aligned with user needs. In terms of market presence, DeFi continues to dominate a substantial portion of the cryptocurrency market, with billions in daily trading volume across various decentralized exchanges. Additionally, integrations with traditional finance and partnerships with established blockchain projects further solidify DeFi's role in the broader financial ecosystem. These indicators collectively support DeFi's sustained relevance and its evolution within the financial technology landscape.
Who is DeFi designed for?
DeFi is designed for a diverse range of primary users, including consumers, developers, and institutions, enabling them to access financial services without traditional intermediaries. It provides essential tools and resources such as decentralized applications (dApps), smart contracts, and user-friendly wallets to facilitate participation in various financial activities like lending, borrowing, and trading. For consumers, DeFi offers opportunities for earning yields on assets, accessing loans, and engaging in decentralized exchanges. Developers benefit from a robust ecosystem that allows them to create innovative financial products and services, leveraging open-source protocols and APIs for seamless integration. Institutions can explore new avenues for investment and asset management, tapping into the liquidity and transparency that DeFi platforms provide. Secondary participants, such as liquidity providers, validators, and governance token holders, engage through mechanisms like staking, governance participation, and contributing liquidity to decentralized exchanges. This collaborative environment fosters a vibrant ecosystem where all participants can contribute to and benefit from the growth of decentralized finance.
How is DeFi secured?
DeFi typically operates on blockchain networks that utilize various consensus mechanisms, such as Proof of Stake (PoS) or Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS), to validate transactions and maintain network integrity. In these systems, validators are responsible for confirming transactions and adding them to the blockchain. They are selected based on their stake in the network, which aligns their financial interests with the security of the protocol. Cryptographic techniques, such as Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) or Ed25519, are employed to ensure authentication and data integrity, safeguarding against unauthorized access and tampering. These cryptographic primitives play a crucial role in securing transactions and user identities within the DeFi ecosystem. Incentive mechanisms are also integral to DeFi security. Participants earn rewards through staking, which encourages them to act honestly and maintain the network's health. Conversely, slashing penalties are imposed on validators who engage in malicious behavior, further aligning their incentives with the network's security. Additional safeguards, including regular audits, bug bounty programs, and robust governance processes, enhance the resilience of DeFi protocols, ensuring that vulnerabilities are addressed and the network remains secure against potential threats.
Has DeFi faced any controversy or risks?
DeFi has faced significant controversies and risks, particularly related to security incidents and regulatory challenges. One notable incident occurred in 2021 when several DeFi protocols experienced exploits due to vulnerabilities in smart contracts, leading to substantial financial losses for users. For example, the Poly Network hack resulted in over $600 million being stolen, prompting a response from the team that included a public appeal for the return of funds and subsequent recovery of most assets. Regulatory scrutiny has also intensified, with various governments examining the compliance of DeFi platforms with existing financial regulations. This has led to discussions about the need for clearer regulatory frameworks to address issues such as money laundering and consumer protection. In response to these challenges, many DeFi projects have implemented measures such as security audits, bug bounty programs, and community governance to enhance transparency and security. Ongoing risks in the DeFi space include market volatility, technical vulnerabilities, and regulatory uncertainties, which are being mitigated through continuous development practices, regular audits, and proactive engagement with regulatory bodies.

What is Market depth?
Market depth is a metric, which is showing the real liquidity of the markets. Due to rampant wash-trading and fake activity - volume currently isn't the most reliable indicator in the crypto space.
What is it measuring?
It's measuring 1% or 10% section of the order book from the midpoint price (1%/10% of the buy orders, and 1%/10% of the sell orders).

Why it is important to use only 1% or 10%?
It's important, because measurement of the whole order book is going to give false results due to extreme values, which can make false illusion of liquidity for a given market.
How to use it?
By default Market depth is showing the most liquid markets sorted by Combined Orders (which is a sum of buy and sell orders). This way it provides the most interesting information already. Left (green) side of the market depth bar is showing how many buy orders are open, and right (red) side of the bar is showing how many sell orders are open (both can be recalculated to BTC, ETH or any fiat we have available on the site).

Confidence
Due to rampant malicious practices in the crypto exchanges environment, we have introduced in 2019 and 2020 new ways of evaluating exchanges and one of them is - Confidence. Because it's a new metric - it's essential to know how it works.
Confidence is weighted based on 3 principles:
Based on the liquidity from order books (75%) - including overall liquidity and market depth/volume ratio, volumes included, if exchange is low volume (below 2M USD volume 24h)
Based on web traffic (20%) - using Alexa rank as a main indicator of site popularity
Based on regulation (5%) - researching and evaluating licensing for exchange - by respective institutions
Adding all of these subscores give overall main result - Confidence
Confidence is mainly based on liquidity, because it's the most important aspect of cryptocurrency exchanges. Without liquidity there is no trading, illiquid markets tend to collapse in the long term. Besides liquidity - there is also an additional factor in calculation of score - market depth/volume ratio. If volume is huge (especially when it’s growing much faster than liquidity), and market depth seems to not keep pace with - it's reducing overall score. Exchanges that keep market makers liquidity with expanding volume are those that keep all ratios in-tact and have overall score above 75-80% (it means that they have all liquidity ratios above minimum requirements, high web traffic participation, and are often regulated).
