Audius (AUDIO)
What is Audius?
Audius (AUDIO) is a decentralized music streaming protocol launched in 2018 by Roneil Rumburg and Forrest Browning. It was created to address the inefficiencies and lack of transparency in the traditional music industry by providing artists with direct control over their music distribution and monetization. The platform operates on the Ethereum blockchain and uses a decentralized network to enable music streaming and sharing. The native token, AUDIO, serves multiple roles within the Audius ecosystem, including governance, staking, and incentivizing network participants. Artists can earn AUDIO tokens based on their music's popularity, while users can stake tokens to participate in governance decisions and improve the platform's security. Audius stands out for its focus on empowering artists by eliminating intermediaries, thereby offering a fairer revenue distribution model. This approach positions Audius as a significant player in the music streaming industry, leveraging blockchain technology to create a more equitable ecosystem for artists and listeners alike.
When and how did Audius start?
Audius originated in January 2018 when co-founders Roneil Rumburg and Forrest Browning initiated the project to address challenges in the music streaming industry. The team released its whitepaper shortly thereafter, outlining their vision for a decentralized music streaming platform. Audius launched its testnet in September 2019, providing an initial glimpse into its capabilities and allowing early participants to engage with the platform. The mainnet followed in October 2020, marking its official public release and enabling broader access for artists and users. The initial token distribution occurred through a combination of strategic sales and community incentives, which helped establish a user base and incentivize participation in the Audius ecosystem. These foundational steps set the stage for Audius's continued development and growth within the decentralized music streaming space.
What’s coming up for Audius?
According to official updates, Audius is preparing to enhance its platform with several key initiatives. One of the upcoming milestones includes the integration of a new reward system, which is targeted for release in the next quarter. This feature aims to improve user engagement by providing more incentives for artists and listeners. Additionally, Audius plans to upgrade its protocol to enhance scalability and performance, with this upgrade slated for the first half of the upcoming year. Another significant development is the planned integration with additional blockchain networks, which will expand the platform's interoperability and reach. These initiatives are designed to strengthen Audius's position in the music streaming industry and improve the overall user experience. Progress on these developments can be tracked through their official updates and community governance discussions.
What makes Audius stand out?
Audius stands out through its decentralized music streaming protocol, leveraging blockchain technology to empower artists and creators. It utilizes a unique architecture built on the Ethereum and Solana blockchains, allowing for efficient content distribution and rewarding artists directly with its native token, AUDIO. This design ensures transparency and fairness in royalty distribution, bypassing traditional intermediaries. The platform's decentralized governance model, where AUDIO token holders can participate in decision-making processes, enhances community engagement and project evolution. Audius also integrates with popular platforms like TikTok, broadening its reach and user engagement. These features position Audius as a distinct entity in the music streaming industry, offering a blockchain-based alternative that prioritizes artist control and direct fan interaction.
What can you do with Audius?
The AUDIO token is primarily used within the Audius platform to facilitate various functions. Users can utilize AUDIO for transactions such as tipping artists or unlocking exclusive content. Holders have the ability to stake AUDIO, which helps secure the network and allows them to potentially earn rewards. Additionally, AUDIO holders can participate in governance by voting on proposals that influence the future development of the Audius platform. Developers can engage with Audius by building decentralized applications (dApps) or integrating the platform's functionalities into their own projects. The Audius ecosystem supports various applications and tools that interact with AUDIO, including wallets and marketplaces, enhancing the overall user experience by providing seamless access to music streaming and artist engagement features.
Is Audius still active or relevant?
Audius remains active, demonstrated by recent updates and ongoing developments. As of October 2023, Audius has continued to release updates to enhance its platform, focusing on improving user experience and expanding its feature set. The project maintains active engagement in its governance, with proposals and community votes regularly occurring, indicating a vibrant and participatory community. Audius has also secured integrations with popular platforms and services, ensuring its continued use and relevance in the music streaming sector. These indicators suggest that Audius remains a significant player in the decentralized music streaming industry, with ongoing activity and relevance.
Who is Audius designed for?
Audius is designed primarily for music creators and listeners, enabling them to share and discover music in a decentralized manner. For creators, Audius provides a platform to upload and monetize their music directly, bypassing traditional intermediaries. It offers tools to manage and distribute content while maintaining control over their work. Listeners benefit from a diverse music library and the ability to directly support their favorite artists. Secondary participants such as developers and validators also play a crucial role in the Audius ecosystem. Developers can leverage Audius's open-source nature to build applications and integrate with the platform using available APIs and SDKs. Validators contribute by securing the network and processing transactions, often engaging through staking mechanisms. Together, these groups help sustain and grow the Audius ecosystem, fostering a community-driven music streaming platform.
How is Audius secured?
Audius uses a Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS) consensus mechanism, where validators, known as node operators, confirm transactions and maintain network integrity. Participants in the network can stake their AUDIO tokens to choose these validators, aligning incentives to ensure honest behavior. The protocol employs cryptographic techniques such as Ed25519 for authentication and data integrity, ensuring secure and tamper-proof transactions. Validators are rewarded with AUDIO tokens for their participation, while misbehavior can lead to slashing, where a portion of the validator's staked tokens may be forfeited. This combination of rewards and penalties helps deter malicious activities. Additionally, Audius undergoes regular security audits to identify and mitigate vulnerabilities, further enhancing the network's resilience and trustworthiness.
Has Audius faced any controversy or risks?
Audius has faced several controversies and risks, primarily related to technical and security factors. In July 2022, Audius experienced a governance exploit where an attacker managed to manipulate the governance system to transfer a significant amount of AUDIO tokens to themselves. The exploit was addressed by the Audius team through a patch to the governance contract and subsequent audits to prevent similar vulnerabilities. Additionally, the project has been transparent about ongoing risks such as potential technical vulnerabilities and market volatility, which they mitigate through regular security audits and community engagement. As with many blockchain projects, Audius remains vigilant against regulatory challenges and continues to adapt its practices to ensure compliance and security.

What is Market depth?
Market depth is a metric, which is showing the real liquidity of the markets. Due to rampant wash-trading and fake activity - volume currently isn't the most reliable indicator in the crypto space.
What is it measuring?
It's measuring 1% or 10% section of the order book from the midpoint price (1%/10% of the buy orders, and 1%/10% of the sell orders).

Why it is important to use only 1% or 10%?
It's important, because measurement of the whole order book is going to give false results due to extreme values, which can make false illusion of liquidity for a given market.
How to use it?
By default Market depth is showing the most liquid markets sorted by Combined Orders (which is a sum of buy and sell orders). This way it provides the most interesting information already. Left (green) side of the market depth bar is showing how many buy orders are open, and right (red) side of the bar is showing how many sell orders are open (both can be recalculated to BTC, ETH or any fiat we have available on the site).

Confidence
Due to rampant malicious practices in the crypto exchanges environment, we have introduced in 2019 and 2020 new ways of evaluating exchanges and one of them is - Confidence. Because it's a new metric - it's essential to know how it works.
Confidence is weighted based on 3 principles:
Based on the liquidity from order books (75%) - including overall liquidity and market depth/volume ratio, volumes included, if exchange is low volume (below 2M USD volume 24h)
Based on web traffic (20%) - using Alexa rank as a main indicator of site popularity
Based on regulation (5%) - researching and evaluating licensing for exchange - by respective institutions
Adding all of these subscores give overall main result - Confidence
Confidence is mainly based on liquidity, because it's the most important aspect of cryptocurrency exchanges. Without liquidity there is no trading, illiquid markets tend to collapse in the long term. Besides liquidity - there is also an additional factor in calculation of score - market depth/volume ratio. If volume is huge (especially when it’s growing much faster than liquidity), and market depth seems to not keep pace with - it's reducing overall score. Exchanges that keep market makers liquidity with expanding volume are those that keep all ratios in-tact and have overall score above 75-80% (it means that they have all liquidity ratios above minimum requirements, high web traffic participation, and are often regulated).
