LBRY Credits (LBC)
What is LBRY Credits?
LBRY Credits (LBC) is a digital currency designed to facilitate decentralized content sharing and publishing. Launched by the LBRY team, it aims to provide a platform where users can access, publish, and monetize digital content without intermediaries. The LBRY network operates on its own blockchain, utilizing a proof-of-work consensus mechanism to ensure security and transparency. LBC, the native token of the LBRY network, plays a crucial role in the ecosystem by being used for transactions, including purchasing content and compensating creators. It serves as a utility token within the platform, enabling users to engage with the decentralized marketplace effectively. LBRY Credits distinguishes itself by focusing on content creators and consumers, offering a more open and equitable alternative to traditional content distribution platforms. This positions LBRY as a significant player in the realm of decentralized content sharing, emphasizing user control and freedom from censorship.
When and how did LBRY Credits start?
LBRY Credits originated in July 2016 when the team behind LBRY released its platform to the public. The project was spearheaded by Jeremy Kauffman, who co-founded LBRY, Inc. The mainnet for LBRY Credits (LBC) was launched in June 2016, marking the initial public availability of the blockchain and its native token. The early development of LBRY Credits focused on creating a decentralized content-sharing platform, allowing users to publish, access, and monetize digital content without intermediaries. The initial distribution of LBRY Credits did not involve an ICO; instead, the tokens were distributed through a mining-based model, with a portion reserved for the development team and community incentives. These foundational steps established the groundwork for LBRY Credits' growth within the decentralized content distribution ecosystem.
What’s coming up for LBRY Credits?
According to official updates, LBRY Credits is preparing for several upcoming milestones. One key focus is on enhancing the platform's scalability and user experience through planned protocol upgrades. These improvements aim to streamline content discovery and distribution, making the platform more accessible and efficient for users. Additionally, there are initiatives to expand the ecosystem through potential integrations with other decentralized platforms, although specific partners and timelines have not been officially confirmed. The project is also exploring governance enhancements to allow for more community-driven decision-making. These efforts are part of LBRY's ongoing commitment to improving its decentralized content-sharing protocol, with progress being tracked through their official development channels and community updates.
What makes LBRY Credits stand out?
LBRY Credits stands out through its unique decentralized content distribution protocol, which leverages blockchain technology to enable a peer-to-peer network for publishing and accessing digital content. This approach ensures that content is not controlled by a single entity, promoting greater freedom and censorship resistance. The architecture of LBRY Credits includes a blockchain-based ledger that records transactions and metadata related to content distribution, ensuring transparency and immutability. Additionally, LBRY Credits facilitates seamless interoperability by supporting various media types and formats, enhancing the user and developer experience. The ecosystem is further distinguished by its focus on empowering content creators with direct monetization options, bypassing traditional intermediaries. This positions LBRY Credits as a distinct player in the digital content landscape, offering a decentralized alternative to mainstream platforms.
What can you do with LBRY Credits?
LBRY Credits (LBC) serve as the utility token within the LBRY ecosystem, primarily used for transactions and accessing content on the LBRY network. Users can use LBC to publish, purchase, and tip digital content, facilitating a decentralized content marketplace. The token also plays a role in incentivizing network participation, where users can earn LBC by contributing to the network through activities such as hosting content or engaging with the platform. Developers can integrate LBC into their applications to enable content-related transactions and build decentralized applications (dApps) on the LBRY protocol. The ecosystem supports various wallets that store and manage LBC, allowing users to interact seamlessly with the platform. Additionally, LBC may be used to support content creators through direct tips or as a payment for premium content, enhancing the monetization options available to creators within the LBRY network.
Is LBRY Credits still active or relevant?
LBRY Credits (LBC) remains active, with recent developments indicating ongoing engagement within its ecosystem. As of the latest updates, the project has continued its focus on enhancing the LBRY protocol, which serves as a decentralized content-sharing platform. While LBC is not listed on major exchanges, it is still traded on smaller platforms, suggesting a niche but persistent market presence. Development activity can be observed through periodic updates on their GitHub repository, although the frequency of these updates has slowed in recent months. The project maintains a presence on social media platforms, where it shares updates and engages with its community, demonstrating ongoing interaction and support. Despite facing regulatory challenges, LBRY Credits continues to be relevant within the decentralized content-sharing sector. Its continued activity and the persistence of its community support its ongoing relevance, especially among users and creators looking for alternatives to traditional content platforms.
Who is LBRY Credits designed for?
LBRY Credits is designed for content creators and consumers, enabling them to distribute and access digital content in a decentralized manner. It provides tools and resources, including a blockchain-based platform and wallet support, to facilitate the sharing and purchasing of content without intermediaries. Secondary participants such as developers and community contributors engage via open-source development and community governance, contributing to the broader ecosystem. This setup allows creators to monetize their work directly and consumers to discover and support content they value, fostering a more equitable digital content economy.
How is LBRY Credits secured?
LBRY Credits is secured using a Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus mechanism, where miners validate transactions and maintain the integrity of the network by solving complex cryptographic puzzles. This process ensures that transactions are confirmed and added to the blockchain in a decentralized manner. The network employs cryptographic techniques such as SHA-256 for hashing, which provides authentication and data integrity, ensuring that transaction records cannot be altered once confirmed. Incentives for miners are aligned through block rewards, which are issued to miners for successfully validating transactions and adding new blocks to the blockchain. This reward mechanism encourages participation and contributes to the network's security by making it economically advantageous for miners to act honestly rather than maliciously. Additional security measures include regular audits and community governance processes, which help identify and mitigate potential vulnerabilities, enhancing the network's resilience against attacks and ensuring its ongoing reliability.
Has LBRY Credits faced any controversy or risks?
LBRY Credits has faced significant regulatory controversy, particularly involving legal challenges from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). In March 2021, the SEC filed a lawsuit against LBRY Inc., alleging that LBRY Credits were sold as unregistered securities. This legal challenge posed a major risk to the project's viability and operations. In response, LBRY Inc. defended its position, arguing that LBRY Credits function as a utility token for accessing services on its decentralized content platform. Despite these efforts, in November 2022, a U.S. federal judge ruled in favor of the SEC, stating that LBRY Credits were indeed securities. This ruling has had a substantial impact on the project's future and regulatory standing. The controversy highlighted ongoing risks associated with regulatory compliance in the cryptocurrency space. LBRY Inc. has since focused on increasing transparency and compliance to mitigate such risks. However, the ruling has set a precedent that could influence other blockchain projects, emphasizing the need for clear regulatory frameworks and proactive engagement with regulatory bodies.

What is Market depth?
Market depth is a metric, which is showing the real liquidity of the markets. Due to rampant wash-trading and fake activity - volume currently isn't the most reliable indicator in the crypto space.
What is it measuring?
It's measuring 1% or 10% section of the order book from the midpoint price (1%/10% of the buy orders, and 1%/10% of the sell orders).

Why it is important to use only 1% or 10%?
It's important, because measurement of the whole order book is going to give false results due to extreme values, which can make false illusion of liquidity for a given market.
How to use it?
By default Market depth is showing the most liquid markets sorted by Combined Orders (which is a sum of buy and sell orders). This way it provides the most interesting information already. Left (green) side of the market depth bar is showing how many buy orders are open, and right (red) side of the bar is showing how many sell orders are open (both can be recalculated to BTC, ETH or any fiat we have available on the site).

Confidence
Due to rampant malicious practices in the crypto exchanges environment, we have introduced in 2019 and 2020 new ways of evaluating exchanges and one of them is - Confidence. Because it's a new metric - it's essential to know how it works.
Confidence is weighted based on 3 principles:
Based on the liquidity from order books (75%) - including overall liquidity and market depth/volume ratio, volumes included, if exchange is low volume (below 2M USD volume 24h)
Based on web traffic (20%) - using Alexa rank as a main indicator of site popularity
Based on regulation (5%) - researching and evaluating licensing for exchange - by respective institutions
Adding all of these subscores give overall main result - Confidence
Confidence is mainly based on liquidity, because it's the most important aspect of cryptocurrency exchanges. Without liquidity there is no trading, illiquid markets tend to collapse in the long term. Besides liquidity - there is also an additional factor in calculation of score - market depth/volume ratio. If volume is huge (especially when it’s growing much faster than liquidity), and market depth seems to not keep pace with - it's reducing overall score. Exchanges that keep market makers liquidity with expanding volume are those that keep all ratios in-tact and have overall score above 75-80% (it means that they have all liquidity ratios above minimum requirements, high web traffic participation, and are often regulated).
