Ampleforth Governance Token (FORTH)
What is Ampleforth Governance Token?
Ampleforth Governance Token (FORTH) is a governance token for the Ampleforth protocol, which was launched in September 2020 by the Ampleforth team. The project aims to create a decentralized monetary system that adjusts its supply based on demand, allowing for a more stable and adaptable form of digital currency. The Ampleforth protocol operates on the Ethereum blockchain, utilizing a unique elastic supply mechanism that automatically adjusts the total supply of its native token, AMPL, in response to changes in demand. This mechanism is designed to maintain price stability and reduce volatility, distinguishing it from traditional cryptocurrencies. FORTH serves multiple roles within the Ampleforth ecosystem, primarily focusing on governance. Holders of FORTH can participate in decision-making processes regarding protocol upgrades, changes to the governance structure, and other critical aspects of the project. This governance model empowers the community and aligns the interests of token holders with the long-term success of the protocol. Ampleforth Governance Token stands out for its innovative approach to supply elasticity and decentralized governance, positioning it as a significant player in the evolving landscape of decentralized finance (DeFi).
When and how did Ampleforth Governance Token start?
Ampleforth Governance Token originated in September 2019 when the founding team, led by Evan Kuo, released its whitepaper, outlining the project’s unique approach to a decentralized monetary system. The project launched its testnet in December 2019, allowing developers and early adopters to experiment with the protocol's features. The mainnet was subsequently launched in July 2020, marking the token's transition to a fully operational state. Early development focused on creating a protocol that could adjust its supply based on demand, a concept known as "elastic supply." The initial distribution of Ampleforth tokens occurred through a fair launch model, which began in July 2020, allowing users to acquire tokens without the constraints of traditional fundraising methods like ICOs or IEOs. This approach aimed to foster a more equitable distribution of tokens and establish a strong community foundation for the Ampleforth ecosystem.

How is Ampleforth Governance Token secured?
Ampleforth Governance Token utilizes a decentralized governance model that is secured through a combination of mechanisms. The protocol operates on the Ethereum blockchain, employing a Proof of Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism where validators confirm transactions and maintain the integrity of the network. Validators are required to stake a certain amount of tokens to participate in the validation process, which aligns their incentives with the network's security. For cryptographic security, Ampleforth employs standard techniques such as Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) for authentication and ensuring data integrity. This cryptography is crucial for securing transactions and protecting against unauthorized access. Incentive mechanisms are built into the protocol, rewarding validators with transaction fees and governance tokens for their participation. Additionally, there are slashing penalties in place for malicious behavior, which serve to deter any attempts at fraud or network disruption. The network's resilience is further enhanced by regular audits and a robust governance framework that allows token holders to vote on protocol changes, ensuring a decentralized and secure decision-making process.
Has Ampleforth Governance Token faced any controversy or risks?
Ampleforth Governance Token has faced controversy related to its unique monetary policy and the implications of its elastic supply mechanism. In mid-2020, the project experienced significant volatility, which raised concerns among investors about the stability of its value and the effectiveness of its protocol. The governance model also faced scrutiny regarding the decision-making process and the potential for centralization, as early adopters held a substantial portion of the tokens. To address these concerns, the Ampleforth team implemented various governance upgrades and engaged with the community to enhance transparency and decision-making processes. They introduced measures to improve the protocol's resilience against market fluctuations and emphasized community involvement in governance decisions. Ongoing risks for Ampleforth include market volatility, regulatory scrutiny, and the technical challenges associated with maintaining an elastic supply model. The team continues to mitigate these risks through regular audits, community engagement, and updates to the protocol to ensure its long-term viability and stability.

What is Market depth?
Market depth is a metric, which is showing the real liquidity of the markets. Due to rampant wash-trading and fake activity - volume currently isn't the most reliable indicator in the crypto space.
What is it measuring?
It's measuring 1% or 10% section of the order book from the midpoint price (1%/10% of the buy orders, and 1%/10% of the sell orders).

Why it is important to use only 1% or 10%?
It's important, because measurement of the whole order book is going to give false results due to extreme values, which can make false illusion of liquidity for a given market.
How to use it?
By default Market depth is showing the most liquid markets sorted by Combined Orders (which is a sum of buy and sell orders). This way it provides the most interesting information already. Left (green) side of the market depth bar is showing how many buy orders are open, and right (red) side of the bar is showing how many sell orders are open (both can be recalculated to BTC, ETH or any fiat we have available on the site).

Confidence
Due to rampant malicious practices in the crypto exchanges environment, we have introduced in 2019 and 2020 new ways of evaluating exchanges and one of them is - Confidence. Because it's a new metric - it's essential to know how it works.
Confidence is weighted based on 3 principles:
Based on the liquidity from order books (75%) - including overall liquidity and market depth/volume ratio, volumes included, if exchange is low volume (below 2M USD volume 24h)
Based on web traffic (20%) - using Alexa rank as a main indicator of site popularity
Based on regulation (5%) - researching and evaluating licensing for exchange - by respective institutions
Adding all of these subscores give overall main result - Confidence
Confidence is mainly based on liquidity, because it's the most important aspect of cryptocurrency exchanges. Without liquidity there is no trading, illiquid markets tend to collapse in the long term. Besides liquidity - there is also an additional factor in calculation of score - market depth/volume ratio. If volume is huge (especially when it’s growing much faster than liquidity), and market depth seems to not keep pace with - it's reducing overall score. Exchanges that keep market makers liquidity with expanding volume are those that keep all ratios in-tact and have overall score above 75-80% (it means that they have all liquidity ratios above minimum requirements, high web traffic participation, and are often regulated).
