What is CRISPR?
CRISPR (CRISPR) is a biotechnology project that focuses on gene editing technology, launched in 2012 by a team led by Jennifer Doudna and Emmanuelle Charpentier. It was created to provide a precise, efficient, and versatile method for modifying DNA in various organisms, which has significant implications for medicine, agriculture, and biological research. The CRISPR technology operates on the principle of utilizing a guide RNA to direct the Cas9 enzyme to specific locations in the genome, enabling targeted modifications such as gene knockouts, insertions, or corrections. This innovative approach allows researchers to edit genes with high accuracy and minimal off-target effects. The CRISPR project stands out for its transformative potential in genetic engineering, offering solutions to genetic disorders, enhancing crop resilience, and advancing our understanding of gene functions. Its significance lies in its ability to democratize access to gene editing tools, fostering advancements in various fields and paving the way for future biotechnological innovations.
When and how did CRISPR start?
CRISPR originated in 2012 when a team of researchers, including Jennifer Doudna and Emmanuelle Charpentier, published a groundbreaking paper detailing the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing technology. This publication laid the foundation for the development of CRISPR as a tool for precise genetic modifications. The technology gained significant attention in the scientific community and beyond due to its potential applications in various fields, including medicine and agriculture. Following the initial publication, the first practical applications of CRISPR began to emerge in laboratory settings, with researchers conducting experiments to demonstrate its efficacy in gene editing. The technology's rapid advancement led to the establishment of various startups and research initiatives focused on harnessing CRISPR's capabilities. The initial distribution of CRISPR technology was not through a traditional ICO or token model, as it primarily emerged from academic research and collaborations. Instead, the focus was on licensing the technology for commercial use, which set the stage for its widespread adoption and the development of related products and services in the years that followed.
What’s coming up for CRISPR?
According to official updates, CRISPR is preparing for a significant protocol upgrade aimed at enhancing its gene-editing capabilities, with a targeted release window in Q2 2024. This upgrade is focused on improving precision and efficiency in genetic modifications, which is expected to expand its applications in various fields, including agriculture and medicine. Additionally, CRISPR is working on establishing new partnerships with biotech firms to facilitate the integration of its technology into existing healthcare systems, with announcements anticipated in the coming months. Governance decisions regarding community proposals are also scheduled for review in Q3 2024, which will allow stakeholders to influence the future direction of the project. These milestones aim to strengthen CRISPR's position in the biotech landscape and enhance its usability for researchers and developers, with progress being tracked through their official communication channels.

Who is CRISPR designed for?
CRISPR is designed for researchers, scientists, and institutions in the fields of genetics and biotechnology, enabling them to explore and manipulate genetic material for various applications. It provides essential tools and resources, including comprehensive documentation and protocols, to support experimentation and development in gene editing. Primary users, such as academic researchers and biotech companies, utilize CRISPR technology to advance studies in genetics, develop new therapies, and enhance agricultural practices. Secondary participants, including educators and students, engage with CRISPR through educational programs and workshops, fostering a deeper understanding of genetic engineering and its implications. The platform also supports collaboration among institutions and researchers, facilitating knowledge sharing and innovation in the rapidly evolving field of genetic research. By catering to these diverse user groups, CRISPR contributes to significant advancements in medicine, agriculture, and environmental science.
How is CRISPR secured?
CRISPR employs a proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus mechanism where validators confirm transactions and uphold the integrity of the network. This model requires validators to stake a certain amount of CRISPR tokens, aligning their financial interests with the security of the network. The protocol utilizes advanced cryptographic techniques, such as elliptic curve digital signature algorithm (ECDSA), to ensure authentication and maintain data integrity. Incentive mechanisms are structured to reward honest behavior through staking rewards, while penalties, or slashing, are imposed on validators who act maliciously or fail to meet their responsibilities. This dual approach helps to deter potential attacks and maintain a trustworthy environment for all participants. Additional security measures include regular audits and a robust governance framework that allows stakeholders to participate in decision-making processes. The diversity of client implementations further enhances resilience, ensuring that the network can withstand potential vulnerabilities and maintain operational continuity.
Has CRISPR faced any controversy or risks?
CRISPR has faced significant controversy primarily related to ethical and regulatory concerns surrounding gene editing technologies. Notably, in November 2018, Chinese scientist He Jiankui announced the birth of genetically edited twins, which sparked global outrage and raised questions about the ethical implications of human germline editing. This incident led to calls for stricter regulations and guidelines governing the use of CRISPR technology in humans. In response to these controversies, various scientific organizations and governments have initiated discussions to establish ethical frameworks and regulatory standards for gene editing. For instance, the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Medicine in the United States released recommendations for responsible research and application of human gene editing. Ongoing risks associated with CRISPR include potential off-target effects, where unintended parts of the genome may be altered, leading to unforeseen consequences. To mitigate these risks, researchers are focusing on improving the precision of CRISPR techniques and conducting thorough safety assessments before clinical applications. Additionally, transparency in research practices and public engagement are emphasized to foster trust and understanding of CRISPR technologies.

What is Market depth?
Market depth is a metric, which is showing the real liquidity of the markets. Due to rampant wash-trading and fake activity - volume currently isn't the most reliable indicator in the crypto space.
What is it measuring?
It's measuring 1% or 10% section of the order book from the midpoint price (1%/10% of the buy orders, and 1%/10% of the sell orders).

Why it is important to use only 1% or 10%?
It's important, because measurement of the whole order book is going to give false results due to extreme values, which can make false illusion of liquidity for a given market.
How to use it?
By default Market depth is showing the most liquid markets sorted by Combined Orders (which is a sum of buy and sell orders). This way it provides the most interesting information already. Left (green) side of the market depth bar is showing how many buy orders are open, and right (red) side of the bar is showing how many sell orders are open (both can be recalculated to BTC, ETH or any fiat we have available on the site).

Confidence
Due to rampant malicious practices in the crypto exchanges environment, we have introduced in 2019 and 2020 new ways of evaluating exchanges and one of them is - Confidence. Because it's a new metric - it's essential to know how it works.
Confidence is weighted based on 3 principles:
Based on the liquidity from order books (75%) - including overall liquidity and market depth/volume ratio, volumes included, if exchange is low volume (below 2M USD volume 24h)
Based on web traffic (20%) - using Alexa rank as a main indicator of site popularity
Based on regulation (5%) - researching and evaluating licensing for exchange - by respective institutions
Adding all of these subscores give overall main result - Confidence
Confidence is mainly based on liquidity, because it's the most important aspect of cryptocurrency exchanges. Without liquidity there is no trading, illiquid markets tend to collapse in the long term. Besides liquidity - there is also an additional factor in calculation of score - market depth/volume ratio. If volume is huge (especially when it’s growing much faster than liquidity), and market depth seems to not keep pace with - it's reducing overall score. Exchanges that keep market makers liquidity with expanding volume are those that keep all ratios in-tact and have overall score above 75-80% (it means that they have all liquidity ratios above minimum requirements, high web traffic participation, and are often regulated).

Historical Market Depth is showing the history of liquidity from the markets for a given asset. It’s a measure of combined liquidity from all integrated markets on the coinpaprika’s market depth module.
