What is Status?
Status (SNT) is a decentralized open-source messaging platform and mobile interface designed to interact with decentralized applications (dApps) on the Ethereum blockchain. Launched in 2017 by Jarrad Hope and Carl Bennetts, Status aims to provide a secure and private communication tool that integrates seamlessly with the Ethereum ecosystem. The project operates on the Ethereum blockchain, utilizing its smart contract capabilities to facilitate secure messaging, transactions, and dApp exploration. The native token, SNT, serves multiple roles within the Status network, including governance, enabling users to participate in decision-making processes, and as a utility token for accessing various features and services within the app. Status distinguishes itself with its focus on privacy and decentralization, offering features like Whisper protocol for secure messaging and a user-friendly interface for interacting with Ethereum dApps. This positions Status as a significant player in the realm of decentralized communication and blockchain interaction.
When and how did Status start?
Status originated in January 2017 when founders Carl Bennetts and Jarrad Hope released its whitepaper. The project aimed to create a decentralized, open-source messaging platform and mobile interface for interacting with the Ethereum blockchain. Status launched its testnet in March 2017, followed by the mainnet launch later that year. The initial distribution of the Status Network Token (SNT) occurred through an Initial Coin Offering (ICO) in June 2017, which successfully raised funds to support the project's development. These early steps laid the groundwork for Status's growth and its role within the Ethereum ecosystem.
What’s coming up for Status?
According to official updates, Status is preparing for the release of the "V1" version of its app, targeted for the end of 2023. This release focuses on enhancing user experience and improving the overall stability of the platform. Additionally, Status is working on integrating new privacy features aimed at bolstering user security and anonymity within the app. Another key initiative is the development of a decentralized governance model, which is expected to be rolled out in the first half of 2024. This model will allow community members to have a more direct influence on the project's future decisions. These milestones are part of Status's ongoing efforts to create a more robust and user-centric platform, with progress being tracked through their official GitHub repository and community updates.
What makes Status stand out?
Status distinguishes itself through its unique combination of features that blend secure messaging, a crypto wallet, and a Web3 browser into a single application. This integration enables enhanced privacy and censorship resistance, leveraging a decentralized peer-to-peer network. The platform is built on the Ethereum blockchain, utilizing its robust security and smart contract capabilities. Status also stands out with its Whisper protocol, which facilitates private and secure communication. The project emphasizes decentralization not only in its technology but also in its governance model, involving the community in decision-making processes through a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO). This approach fosters a strong, participatory ecosystem. Additionally, Status has developed its own token, SNT, which is used for various functions within the platform, such as governance and incentivizing network participation. These features collectively contribute to Status’s unique position in the blockchain space, focusing on privacy, decentralization, and user empowerment.
What can you do with Status?
The SNT token is central to the Status ecosystem, primarily used for governance, allowing holders to participate in decision-making processes regarding the platform's future. Users can utilize SNT for transactions within the Status app, which functions as a secure messaging platform, crypto wallet, and Web3 browser. This enables users to send and receive payments, access decentralized applications (dApps), and communicate privately. Holders can stake SNT to run a Status node, contributing to the network's security and resilience. Developers benefit from Status by building dApps using its developer tools and integrating their applications into the Status platform, leveraging its user base and infrastructure. The Status app supports various applications and integrations, enhancing its utility for both users and developers in the ecosystem.

Status remains active through continuous development and updates, with the latest release occurring in September 2023. The project focuses on enhancing its decentralized messaging and communication platform, which is a core component of its ecosystem. Status maintains integrations across Ethereum and other blockchain networks, supporting its relevance in the decentralized application (dApp) sector. Recent governance proposals and community votes indicate ongoing engagement and activity within its user base. These indicators confirm that Status continues to be a relevant player in the blockchain communication space.
Who is Status designed for?
Status is designed for consumers and developers, enabling them to communicate and transact securely and privately using blockchain technology. For consumers, Status functions as a decentralized messaging platform and mobile wallet, allowing them to send messages, make payments, and browse decentralized applications (dApps) in a secure environment. Developers benefit from Status through its open-source framework, which provides tools and resources like SDKs and APIs to create decentralized applications that integrate with the platform. Secondary participants such as validators and creators contribute to the ecosystem by securing the network and developing content or applications that enhance user experience. This multifaceted approach helps Status cater to a diverse group of users focused on privacy and decentralization.
How is Status secured?
Status is secured using the Ethereum blockchain, which employs a Proof of Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism. Validators on the Ethereum network are responsible for confirming transactions and maintaining the integrity of the blockchain. They are required to stake a certain amount of Ether (ETH) to participate in the validation process, aligning their incentives with the network’s security. The cryptographic technique used for authentication and data integrity in Ethereum includes the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA). Incentive mechanisms in the form of staking rewards are provided to validators for their participation, while penalties, such as slashing, are imposed to deter malicious activities. Status also benefits from Ethereum's robust security model, which includes regular audits and a strong governance framework to ensure the network's resilience and reliability. These mechanisms collectively enhance the security of Status by leveraging Ethereum’s established infrastructure.
Has Status faced any controversy or risks?
Status has faced several controversies and risks primarily involving technical and community factors. In July 2018, the Status team discovered a vulnerability in their Whisper protocol, which could potentially expose user metadata. This was addressed through a patch and a subsequent security audit to ensure the robustness of the fix. Additionally, Status has encountered community governance challenges, particularly regarding the allocation of funds and project direction. These were managed through open governance discussions and community votes to align on project priorities. Ongoing risks for Status include technical challenges related to maintaining privacy and security on its decentralized platform, as well as regulatory scrutiny common to projects operating in the blockchain space. The team mitigates these risks through continuous development practices, regular security audits, and transparency in governance processes. Status also actively participates in bug bounty programs to identify and fix vulnerabilities proactively.

What is Market depth?
Market depth is a metric, which is showing the real liquidity of the markets. Due to rampant wash-trading and fake activity - volume currently isn't the most reliable indicator in the crypto space.
What is it measuring?
It's measuring 1% or 10% section of the order book from the midpoint price (1%/10% of the buy orders, and 1%/10% of the sell orders).

Why it is important to use only 1% or 10%?
It's important, because measurement of the whole order book is going to give false results due to extreme values, which can make false illusion of liquidity for a given market.
How to use it?
By default Market depth is showing the most liquid markets sorted by Combined Orders (which is a sum of buy and sell orders). This way it provides the most interesting information already. Left (green) side of the market depth bar is showing how many buy orders are open, and right (red) side of the bar is showing how many sell orders are open (both can be recalculated to BTC, ETH or any fiat we have available on the site).

Confidence
Due to rampant malicious practices in the crypto exchanges environment, we have introduced in 2019 and 2020 new ways of evaluating exchanges and one of them is - Confidence. Because it's a new metric - it's essential to know how it works.
Confidence is weighted based on 3 principles:
Based on the liquidity from order books (75%) - including overall liquidity and market depth/volume ratio, volumes included, if exchange is low volume (below 2M USD volume 24h)
Based on web traffic (20%) - using Alexa rank as a main indicator of site popularity
Based on regulation (5%) - researching and evaluating licensing for exchange - by respective institutions
Adding all of these subscores give overall main result - Confidence
Confidence is mainly based on liquidity, because it's the most important aspect of cryptocurrency exchanges. Without liquidity there is no trading, illiquid markets tend to collapse in the long term. Besides liquidity - there is also an additional factor in calculation of score - market depth/volume ratio. If volume is huge (especially when it’s growing much faster than liquidity), and market depth seems to not keep pace with - it's reducing overall score. Exchanges that keep market makers liquidity with expanding volume are those that keep all ratios in-tact and have overall score above 75-80% (it means that they have all liquidity ratios above minimum requirements, high web traffic participation, and are often regulated).
