When and how did PayPal USD start?
PayPal USD originated in August 2023 when PayPal, the global online payment platform, announced its entry into the stablecoin market with the launch of PayPal USD (PYUSD). The stablecoin was introduced to enhance the integration of digital currencies within PayPal's existing financial ecosystem. The project was developed in collaboration with Paxos Trust Company, a regulated blockchain infrastructure platform, which is responsible for issuing the stablecoin. PayPal USD is built on the Ethereum blockchain, leveraging its widespread adoption and robust infrastructure. The initial distribution of PayPal USD did not follow traditional ICO or airdrop models; instead, it was made available directly to PayPal users, integrating seamlessly into PayPal's extensive network. This strategic launch aimed to provide users with a stable digital currency option for transactions and transfers, laying the groundwork for its future integration and use within PayPal's services.
What’s coming up for PayPal USD?
According to official updates, PayPal USD (PYUSD) is preparing for several upcoming milestones aimed at expanding its utility and integration within the broader financial ecosystem. One key initiative includes enhancing its presence on various blockchain networks, which is targeted for the coming quarters. This aims to increase the accessibility and interoperability of PYUSD across different platforms. Additionally, there are plans to integrate PYUSD into more PayPal services, allowing for seamless use in transactions and peer-to-peer transfers. These efforts are designed to improve user experience and broaden the adoption of PYUSD in both consumer and merchant transactions. Progress on these initiatives will be monitored through PayPal's official channels and updates.

How is PayPal USD secured?
PayPal USD is secured using the Ethereum blockchain, which operates on a Proof of Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism. In this system, validators are responsible for confirming transactions and maintaining the network's integrity. Validators are required to hold a certain amount of Ethereum as collateral, aligning their incentives with the network's security. The protocol employs cryptographic techniques, such as Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA), to ensure authentication and data integrity. To discourage malicious behavior, the PoS system includes slashing penalties for validators who act dishonestly or fail to perform their duties, which helps maintain trust and security across the network. Furthermore, PayPal USD benefits from the robust security measures inherent to the Ethereum blockchain, including regular audits and a diverse client ecosystem, which enhance the network's resilience and reliability.
Has PayPal USD faced any controversy or risks?
PayPal USD has faced scrutiny primarily related to regulatory and compliance risks since its launch. As a stablecoin issued by a major financial services company, it operates under the watchful eye of regulatory bodies concerned with financial stability, consumer protection, and anti-money laundering measures. Concerns have been raised about the potential for regulatory changes impacting its operations or the broader stablecoin market. PayPal has addressed these concerns by ensuring that PayPal USD is fully backed by U.S. dollar deposits and short-term U.S. Treasuries, and by adhering to applicable financial regulations. They maintain transparency and compliance through regular audits and disclosures. Ongoing risks include regulatory shifts and market volatility, which PayPal mitigates through proactive engagement with regulators and robust risk management practices.

What is Market depth?
Market depth is a metric, which is showing the real liquidity of the markets. Due to rampant wash-trading and fake activity - volume currently isn't the most reliable indicator in the crypto space.
What is it measuring?
It's measuring 1% or 10% section of the order book from the midpoint price (1%/10% of the buy orders, and 1%/10% of the sell orders).

Why it is important to use only 1% or 10%?
It's important, because measurement of the whole order book is going to give false results due to extreme values, which can make false illusion of liquidity for a given market.
How to use it?
By default Market depth is showing the most liquid markets sorted by Combined Orders (which is a sum of buy and sell orders). This way it provides the most interesting information already. Left (green) side of the market depth bar is showing how many buy orders are open, and right (red) side of the bar is showing how many sell orders are open (both can be recalculated to BTC, ETH or any fiat we have available on the site).

Confidence
Due to rampant malicious practices in the crypto exchanges environment, we have introduced in 2019 and 2020 new ways of evaluating exchanges and one of them is - Confidence. Because it's a new metric - it's essential to know how it works.
Confidence is weighted based on 3 principles:
Based on the liquidity from order books (75%) - including overall liquidity and market depth/volume ratio, volumes included, if exchange is low volume (below 2M USD volume 24h)
Based on web traffic (20%) - using Alexa rank as a main indicator of site popularity
Based on regulation (5%) - researching and evaluating licensing for exchange - by respective institutions
Adding all of these subscores give overall main result - Confidence
Confidence is mainly based on liquidity, because it's the most important aspect of cryptocurrency exchanges. Without liquidity there is no trading, illiquid markets tend to collapse in the long term. Besides liquidity - there is also an additional factor in calculation of score - market depth/volume ratio. If volume is huge (especially when it’s growing much faster than liquidity), and market depth seems to not keep pace with - it's reducing overall score. Exchanges that keep market makers liquidity with expanding volume are those that keep all ratios in-tact and have overall score above 75-80% (it means that they have all liquidity ratios above minimum requirements, high web traffic participation, and are often regulated).
