What is MerlinSwap?
MerlinSwap (MERL) is a decentralized exchange (DEX) launched in 2021, designed to facilitate seamless trading of cryptocurrencies. It operates primarily on the Ethereum blockchain, utilizing an automated market maker (AMM) model that allows users to trade tokens directly from their wallets without the need for an intermediary. The platform aims to enhance liquidity and provide users with a user-friendly interface for trading various digital assets. The native token, MERL, serves multiple purposes within the ecosystem, including governance, where holders can participate in decision-making processes, and incentivizing liquidity providers through rewards. Additionally, MERL can be used for transaction fees on the platform. MerlinSwap stands out for its focus on community-driven governance and its innovative liquidity mining programs, which encourage users to contribute to the liquidity pools. This positions MerlinSwap as a significant player in the DeFi space, catering to users seeking decentralized trading solutions and opportunities for earning passive income through liquidity provision.
When and how did MerlinSwap start?
MerlinSwap originated in September 2021 when the founding team released its whitepaper, outlining the project's vision and technical framework. The project launched its testnet in October 2021, allowing users to explore its features and functionalities in a controlled environment. Following successful testing, the mainnet was launched in December 2021, marking the platform's official public availability. Early development focused on creating a decentralized exchange that would facilitate seamless token swaps and liquidity provision on the blockchain. The initial distribution of the native token occurred through a fair launch model in January 2022, which aimed to ensure equitable access for early adopters and community members. These foundational steps established the groundwork for MerlinSwap's growth and the development of its ecosystem, positioning it as a player in the decentralized finance space.

Who is MerlinSwap designed for?
MerlinSwap is designed for a primary audience of cryptocurrency users and liquidity providers, enabling them to efficiently swap and trade digital assets. It provides essential tools and resources, including user-friendly wallets and liquidity pools, to facilitate seamless transactions and enhance user experience. Secondary participants, such as developers and liquidity providers, engage through governance mechanisms and staking opportunities, contributing to the platform's liquidity and overall ecosystem health. By offering a decentralized exchange environment, MerlinSwap caters to users looking for a secure and efficient way to manage their crypto assets while also allowing developers to build and innovate on its platform. This dual focus helps foster a vibrant community and encourages participation across various roles within the ecosystem.
How is MerlinSwap secured?
MerlinSwap employs a decentralized consensus mechanism that ensures the integrity and security of its transactions. The protocol utilizes a Proof of Stake (PoS) model, where validators are responsible for confirming transactions and maintaining the network. Validators are selected based on the amount of cryptocurrency they stake, which aligns their financial interests with the network's health. To secure transactions, MerlinSwap implements advanced cryptographic techniques, including Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA), which provides robust authentication and data integrity. This cryptography ensures that transactions are valid and cannot be tampered with. Incentives for validators are structured through staking rewards, which compensate them for their participation in the network. Additionally, the protocol incorporates slashing mechanisms that penalize malicious behavior, such as double-signing or downtime, further enhancing security. MerlinSwap also emphasizes resilience through regular audits and governance processes, ensuring that any vulnerabilities are addressed promptly. The diversity of client implementations contributes to the overall robustness of the network, safeguarding it against potential attacks.
Has MerlinSwap faced any controversy or risks?
MerlinSwap has faced risks primarily associated with the decentralized finance (DeFi) space, particularly regarding smart contract vulnerabilities and potential exploits. In early 2023, the platform encountered a security incident where a vulnerability in its liquidity pool contracts was identified, leading to concerns about the safety of user funds. The development team responded promptly by conducting a thorough audit of the affected contracts and implementing a patch to address the identified vulnerabilities. They also initiated a bug bounty program to encourage community members to report any further issues. Additionally, like many DeFi projects, MerlinSwap is exposed to ongoing risks such as market volatility, regulatory scrutiny, and the potential for governance disputes within its community. To mitigate these risks, the team emphasizes transparency in their operations, regular security audits, and proactive communication with users regarding any updates or changes to the platform's security measures.

What is Market depth?
Market depth is a metric, which is showing the real liquidity of the markets. Due to rampant wash-trading and fake activity - volume currently isn't the most reliable indicator in the crypto space.
What is it measuring?
It's measuring 1% or 10% section of the order book from the midpoint price (1%/10% of the buy orders, and 1%/10% of the sell orders).

Why it is important to use only 1% or 10%?
It's important, because measurement of the whole order book is going to give false results due to extreme values, which can make false illusion of liquidity for a given market.
How to use it?
By default Market depth is showing the most liquid markets sorted by Combined Orders (which is a sum of buy and sell orders). This way it provides the most interesting information already. Left (green) side of the market depth bar is showing how many buy orders are open, and right (red) side of the bar is showing how many sell orders are open (both can be recalculated to BTC, ETH or any fiat we have available on the site).

Confidence
Due to rampant malicious practices in the crypto exchanges environment, we have introduced in 2019 and 2020 new ways of evaluating exchanges and one of them is - Confidence. Because it's a new metric - it's essential to know how it works.
Confidence is weighted based on 3 principles:
Based on the liquidity from order books (75%) - including overall liquidity and market depth/volume ratio, volumes included, if exchange is low volume (below 2M USD volume 24h)
Based on web traffic (20%) - using Alexa rank as a main indicator of site popularity
Based on regulation (5%) - researching and evaluating licensing for exchange - by respective institutions
Adding all of these subscores give overall main result - Confidence
Confidence is mainly based on liquidity, because it's the most important aspect of cryptocurrency exchanges. Without liquidity there is no trading, illiquid markets tend to collapse in the long term. Besides liquidity - there is also an additional factor in calculation of score - market depth/volume ratio. If volume is huge (especially when it’s growing much faster than liquidity), and market depth seems to not keep pace with - it's reducing overall score. Exchanges that keep market makers liquidity with expanding volume are those that keep all ratios in-tact and have overall score above 75-80% (it means that they have all liquidity ratios above minimum requirements, high web traffic participation, and are often regulated).
