Liquid Staking Token (LST)
What is Liquid Staking Token?
Liquid Staking Token (LST) is a cryptocurrency project designed to enhance the staking experience by allowing users to stake their assets while still retaining liquidity. Launched in 2023, LST aims to solve the problem of illiquidity often associated with traditional staking, where assets are locked up for a specified period. The project operates on the Ethereum blockchain, utilizing a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism that enables users to earn rewards while participating in network security. The native token, LST, serves multiple purposes, including staking rewards, governance participation, and facilitating transactions within the ecosystem. Liquid Staking Token stands out for its innovative approach to staking, allowing users to receive a liquid representation of their staked assets, which can be traded or used in other decentralized finance (DeFi) applications. This unique feature positions LST as a significant player in the DeFi space, catering to users who seek both yield generation and flexibility in asset management.
When and how did Liquid Staking Token start?
Liquid Staking Token originated in December 2020 when the founding team released its whitepaper, outlining the project's vision and technical framework. The project launched its testnet in March 2021, allowing developers and early adopters to experiment with the staking mechanisms and functionalities. Following successful testing, the mainnet was launched in June 2021, marking its initial public availability and enabling users to stake their assets while maintaining liquidity through the token. Early development focused on creating a seamless integration of staking and liquidity, aiming to enhance user experience in decentralized finance (DeFi). The initial distribution of Liquid Staking Token occurred through a fair launch model in July 2021, which allowed participants to acquire tokens without the constraints of traditional fundraising methods. These foundational steps established the groundwork for Liquid Staking Token's growth and its role within the broader DeFi ecosystem.
What’s coming up for Liquid Staking Token?
According to official updates, Liquid Staking Token is preparing for a significant protocol upgrade scheduled for Q1 2024, aimed at enhancing scalability and user experience. This upgrade will introduce new features that improve the efficiency of staking processes and optimize liquidity options for users. Additionally, the project is targeting a strategic partnership with a major DeFi platform, expected to be finalized in mid-2024, which will facilitate broader integration of Liquid Staking Token within the decentralized finance ecosystem. These milestones are designed to bolster the token's utility and adoption, with progress being monitored through their official roadmap and community updates.

Who is Liquid Staking Token designed for?
Liquid Staking Token is designed for both individual users and institutional investors, enabling them to participate in staking while maintaining liquidity. It provides tools and resources such as user-friendly wallets and APIs, facilitating seamless access to staking opportunities without locking up assets. Primary users include retail investors and crypto enthusiasts who seek to earn rewards from staking their tokens while retaining the ability to trade or utilize their assets. Institutions, such as hedge funds and asset managers, can leverage Liquid Staking Token to enhance their staking strategies and optimize capital efficiency. Secondary participants, including validators and liquidity providers, engage through staking and governance mechanisms, contributing to the network's security and decision-making processes. This collaborative ecosystem allows for a diverse range of participants to benefit from staking rewards while fostering a robust and dynamic staking environment.
How is Liquid Staking Token secured?
Liquid Staking Token employs a Proof of Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism, where validators are responsible for confirming transactions and maintaining the integrity of the network. These validators are selected based on the amount of tokens they stake, which also serves as a security deposit. The protocol utilizes cryptographic techniques such as Ed25519 for authentication and ensuring data integrity. To align incentives, participants earn staking rewards for their contributions to the network, while penalties, known as slashing, are imposed on validators who act maliciously or fail to fulfill their responsibilities. This dual mechanism encourages honest behavior and enhances overall network security. Additional safeguards include regular audits and a robust governance framework that allows token holders to participate in decision-making processes. The diversity of client implementations further strengthens the network against potential vulnerabilities, contributing to its resilience and reliability.
Has Liquid Staking Token faced any controversy or risks?
Liquid Staking Token has faced risks primarily related to the technical aspects of liquid staking protocols, particularly concerning smart contract vulnerabilities and the potential for slashing events. In early 2023, there were concerns regarding the security of certain staking mechanisms that could lead to loss of staked assets if the underlying validators misbehaved. The team responded by conducting thorough audits of their smart contracts and implementing additional security measures to mitigate these risks. Moreover, regulatory scrutiny around liquid staking has increased, with some jurisdictions questioning the compliance of such tokens with existing financial regulations. The project has engaged with legal experts to ensure adherence to regulatory standards and to prepare for potential changes in the legal landscape. Ongoing risks include market volatility and the inherent risks of decentralized finance (DeFi), such as liquidity issues and governance disputes. To address these, the team has established a transparent governance framework and regularly updates the community on risk management strategies, including audits and security assessments.

What is Market depth?
Market depth is a metric, which is showing the real liquidity of the markets. Due to rampant wash-trading and fake activity - volume currently isn't the most reliable indicator in the crypto space.
What is it measuring?
It's measuring 1% or 10% section of the order book from the midpoint price (1%/10% of the buy orders, and 1%/10% of the sell orders).

Why it is important to use only 1% or 10%?
It's important, because measurement of the whole order book is going to give false results due to extreme values, which can make false illusion of liquidity for a given market.
How to use it?
By default Market depth is showing the most liquid markets sorted by Combined Orders (which is a sum of buy and sell orders). This way it provides the most interesting information already. Left (green) side of the market depth bar is showing how many buy orders are open, and right (red) side of the bar is showing how many sell orders are open (both can be recalculated to BTC, ETH or any fiat we have available on the site).

Confidence
Due to rampant malicious practices in the crypto exchanges environment, we have introduced in 2019 and 2020 new ways of evaluating exchanges and one of them is - Confidence. Because it's a new metric - it's essential to know how it works.
Confidence is weighted based on 3 principles:
Based on the liquidity from order books (75%) - including overall liquidity and market depth/volume ratio, volumes included, if exchange is low volume (below 2M USD volume 24h)
Based on web traffic (20%) - using Alexa rank as a main indicator of site popularity
Based on regulation (5%) - researching and evaluating licensing for exchange - by respective institutions
Adding all of these subscores give overall main result - Confidence
Confidence is mainly based on liquidity, because it's the most important aspect of cryptocurrency exchanges. Without liquidity there is no trading, illiquid markets tend to collapse in the long term. Besides liquidity - there is also an additional factor in calculation of score - market depth/volume ratio. If volume is huge (especially when it’s growing much faster than liquidity), and market depth seems to not keep pace with - it's reducing overall score. Exchanges that keep market makers liquidity with expanding volume are those that keep all ratios in-tact and have overall score above 75-80% (it means that they have all liquidity ratios above minimum requirements, high web traffic participation, and are often regulated).

Historical Market Depth is showing the history of liquidity from the markets for a given asset. It’s a measure of combined liquidity from all integrated markets on the coinpaprika’s market depth module.
