Crypto firm Paradigm and DeFi group DEF challenge IRS over privacy concerns, defending the rights of digital money users in the U.S.

Crypto company Paradigm challenged a court's decision in the James Harper case against the U.S. tax agency, the IRS. They claim the IRS wrongly used special permission to check private data of about 10,000 Coinbase users.

Paradigm is a crypto firm that stands strong for privacy rights. They say blockchain, the technology behind crypto, relies on privacy. The company stated:

"People expect privacy when they use crypto. The word 'crypto' itself points to secrecy. Many use crypto to keep their actions, like supporting causes, private."

Earlier, a U.S. judge allowed the IRS to use this special permission called John Doe summons. It lets the IRS check data on a group, not just one person. They did this thinking some Coinbase users might not have reported their full income.

Harper sued the IRS in 2020. He said the IRS wrongly took his financial data without telling him or letting him object.

Paradigm has supported other crypto companies before, like Binance and Coinbase, in their fights against U.S. rules.

Another group, the DeFi Education Fund (DEF), also backed Harper. They said crypto data gives the government deep insights into someone's private money matters. They stressed:

"Old rules should protect the same privacy today as they did in the past."

DEF's top legal official, Amanda Tuminelli, mentioned on X (a platform like Twitter):

"We are concerned about the privacy issues for U.S. people using digital money when the government is searching for information without a clear goal." (requote)
