Polygon (MATIC)
What is Polygon?
Polygon (MATIC) is a cryptocurrency that operates on its own layer-2 scaling solution designed to enhance the Ethereum blockchain. It aims to improve transaction speeds and reduce costs while enabling developers to build scalable decentralized applications (dApps) and smart contracts. The Polygon token (MATIC) is used for network governance, staking, and paying transaction fees within the Polygon ecosystem. As a prominent blockchain project, Polygon enhances Ethereum's capabilities, making it a vital player in the growing decentralized finance (DeFi) and non-fungible token (NFT) landscapes.
When and how did Polygon start?
Polygon, originally launched as Matic Network in 2017, was founded by Jaynti Kanani, Sandeep Nailwal, and Anurag Arjun. The project aimed to address Ethereum's scalability issues by providing Layer 2 solutions, enabling faster and cheaper transactions. In 2021, Matic Network rebranded to Polygon to reflect its broader vision of becoming a multi-chain ecosystem for Ethereum-compatible blockchains. The platform gained significant traction with major exchange listings, including Binance and Coinbase, which helped propel its adoption. Polygon also secured funding through various rounds, raising $450 million in a Series D funding round in 2021, further solidifying its position in the crypto space.
What’s coming up for Polygon?
Polygon (MATIC) is poised for significant advancements as it continues to execute its roadmap, focusing on enhancing scalability and interoperability within the Ethereum ecosystem. Upcoming features include the integration of zero-knowledge rollups, which aim to improve transaction speeds and reduce costs, making the network more efficient for developers and users alike. Additionally, the community plans to expand its DeFi and NFT ecosystems, fostering greater adoption and innovative use cases. As Polygon evolves, it aims to solidify its position as a leading Layer 2 solution, driving further expansion and collaboration within the blockchain space.
What makes Polygon stand out?
Polygon (MATIC) is unique compared to other cryptocurrencies due to its standout technology that enhances Ethereum's scalability through Layer 2 solutions, enabling faster and cheaper transactions. Its special feature includes a robust ecosystem that supports various decentralized applications (dApps) and real-world use cases, such as gaming and DeFi, while utilizing a Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism for efficient and secure operations. This combination of scalability, versatility, and user-friendly infrastructure positions Polygon as a significant player in the blockchain space.
What can you do with Polygon?
Polygon (MATIC) is primarily used for payments and transaction fees within its ecosystem, enabling fast and low-cost operations on Ethereum-compatible networks. Users can stake MATIC to earn rewards, participate in governance decisions, and access various DeFi apps and NFT marketplaces built on the Polygon network. As a utility token, MATIC enhances the overall functionality and user experience across these diverse applications.
Is Polygon still active or relevant?
Polygon (MATIC) is currently active, with ongoing development and a vibrant community presence. It remains a popular choice in the crypto market, as it is still traded on numerous exchanges with significant trading activity. Recent updates from the development team indicate continued innovation and improvements to the platform, confirming that it is not an inactive or abandoned project.
Who is Polygon designed for?
Polygon (MATIC) is built for developers and businesses looking to create scalable and efficient decentralized applications (dApps) on the Ethereum network. Its target audience includes DeFi users and gamers, as it provides low-cost transactions and high throughput, making it ideal for a wide range of blockchain-based solutions. The platform is adopted by a vibrant community of innovators seeking to enhance user experiences in the growing Web3 ecosystem.
How is Polygon secured?
Polygon (MATIC) secures its network using a Proof of Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism, where validators play a crucial role in confirming transactions and maintaining blockchain protection. This setup enhances network security by requiring validators to stake MATIC tokens, aligning their interests with the network's integrity and incentivizing honest behavior. Through this model, Polygon achieves scalability while ensuring robust security and decentralization.
Has Polygon faced any controversy or risks?
Polygon (MATIC) has faced challenges related to extreme volatility, which can pose significant risks for investors. Additionally, the platform has experienced security incidents, including a notable hack in 2021 that resulted in the loss of funds. While there have been no major legal issues or rug pulls directly associated with Polygon, the broader market's unpredictability remains a concern for users and stakeholders.

What is Market depth?
Market depth is a metric, which is showing the real liquidity of the markets. Due to rampant wash-trading and fake activity - volume currently isn't the most reliable indicator in the crypto space.
What is it measuring?
It's measuring 1% or 10% section of the order book from the midpoint price (1%/10% of the buy orders, and 1%/10% of the sell orders).

Why it is important to use only 1% or 10%?
It's important, because measurement of the whole order book is going to give false results due to extreme values, which can make false illusion of liquidity for a given market.
How to use it?
By default Market depth is showing the most liquid markets sorted by Combined Orders (which is a sum of buy and sell orders). This way it provides the most interesting information already. Left (green) side of the market depth bar is showing how many buy orders are open, and right (red) side of the bar is showing how many sell orders are open (both can be recalculated to BTC, ETH or any fiat we have available on the site).

Confidence
Due to rampant malicious practices in the crypto exchanges environment, we have introduced in 2019 and 2020 new ways of evaluating exchanges and one of them is - Confidence. Because it's a new metric - it's essential to know how it works.
Confidence is weighted based on 3 principles:
Based on the liquidity from order books (75%) - including overall liquidity and market depth/volume ratio, volumes included, if exchange is low volume (below 2M USD volume 24h)
Based on web traffic (20%) - using Alexa rank as a main indicator of site popularity
Based on regulation (5%) - researching and evaluating licensing for exchange - by respective institutions
Adding all of these subscores give overall main result - Confidence
Confidence is mainly based on liquidity, because it's the most important aspect of cryptocurrency exchanges. Without liquidity there is no trading, illiquid markets tend to collapse in the long term. Besides liquidity - there is also an additional factor in calculation of score - market depth/volume ratio. If volume is huge (especially when it’s growing much faster than liquidity), and market depth seems to not keep pace with - it's reducing overall score. Exchanges that keep market makers liquidity with expanding volume are those that keep all ratios in-tact and have overall score above 75-80% (it means that they have all liquidity ratios above minimum requirements, high web traffic participation, and are often regulated).
