Gary Gensler Speaks on Crypto Regulation, Market Oversight and Climate Risk Disclosure

Gary Gensler of SEC discusses market safety, crypto rules, and climate reports on Bloomberg TV.

On 21 September 2023, Gary Gensler, the leader of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), spoke on Bloomberg TV with Kailey Leinz. They discussed important topics like a government shutdown, cryptocurrency rules, and climate change reporting.

Gensler said that if the government shuts down, the SEC can't watch over financial markets properly. With fewer workers, the SEC can't review new company filings. Even though the U.S. Treasury and stock markets would keep running, there wouldn't be proper checks on them.

Talking about cryptocurrency, Gensler wants to keep investors safe. He compared today's crypto market to old stock markets, reminding everyone that SEC rules apply to certain cryptocurrencies. He worries because many people lost money in crypto scams.

About Bitcoin Futures ETFs, Gensler didn't promise any action. However, he did say the SEC considers court decisions and is still figuring out the rules for Bitcoin products.

On the topic of climate change, Gensler said the SEC is listening to the public's opinion. Many companies are already reporting on climate risks and the SEC wants to make this reporting clearer. He didn't say if they would include all types of emissions.
