Friend.tech Users Face Phone Hacks, Losing Huge Amounts of Ethereum

People using Friend-tech are sounding the alarm about dangerous phone hacks after some users lost a lot of Cryptocurrency (Ether) which is worth a lot of money. 

On September 30. a user called “froggie.eth” on X (what we used to call Twitter) said that hackers did a SIM swap on their Friend-tech account. This means that the bad actors took control of froggie.eth's phone number got security codes, and got into their account, taking more than 20 Ether.

A few days afterward, on October 3, more Friend-tech users spoke up about similar bad experiences. For example, musician Daren Broxmeyer shared he was also SIM-swapped and lost 22 Ether. His phone was bombarded with calls, which he thinks was done so he’d miss a warning message about his account being accessed.

Another user, named “dipper”, said their account was broken into even though they used strong passwords and weren’t sure how it was hacked. The fourth user, “digging4doge”, lost about 60 Ether because they were tricked into sharing a login code in a phishing scam.

Manifold Trading, a company that invests in digital money, said that if a hacker gets into a Friend-tech account, they can do a lot of damage to it. They think around $20 million could be at risk and fixing this problem should be Friend-tech's biggest priority right now. 

They suggested Friend-tech should let users have extra security with 2FA (two-factor authentication) for logging in, decoding keys, and making transactions. Also, letting people change their login from using a phone number to an email and using third-party wallets might help.
