Elon Musk announces a new, yet to be confirmed, female CEO for Twitter while indicating a diminished focus on cryptocurrency under his leadership.

Elon Musk, the renowned entrepreneur and CEO of companies like Tesla and SpaceX, has announced his selection of a new CEO for Twitter, as revealed in a tweet on May 10. The tweet mentioned that the new CEO, who is expected to take charge in approximately six weeks, is a woman. Although the specific identity of the new CEO remains undisclosed, many speculate that former Meta COO Sheryl Sandberg is the leading candidate. This development comes after Musk acquired Twitter in October 2022, following prolonged negotiations and apparent cancellations of the deal.

While assuming the role of CEO, Musk made headlines with his ambitious plans to integrate cryptocurrency and blockchain features into the popular social media platform. His vision included enabling Dogecoin payments and transforming Twitter into a hub for crypto enthusiasts. However, recent indications suggest a shift in focus under Musk's leadership, with the company's crypto efforts seemingly reduced. Twitter's collaboration with the stock and crypto trading platform eToro in April was the most notable crypto-related partnership during Musk's tenure. Additionally, Twitter briefly adopted the Dogecoin logo as its own in April, albeit temporarily.

It is worth noting that the majority of Twitter's existing main crypto features, such as crypto tipping and NFT (non-fungible token) profile pictures, were introduced under the leadership of Tess Rinearson. Rinearson headed Twitter's crypto division until November 2022 and joined during Jack Dorsey's tenure as CEO in 2021. These features have been instrumental in cultivating a crypto-friendly atmosphere on the platform.

Despite the imminent introduction of a new CEO, Musk's continued involvement with Twitter as executive chairman and CTO suggests that the company's crypto direction may not experience significant changes. As executive chairman, Musk will likely maintain a prominent role in shaping Twitter's strategic decisions and overall vision. His expertise and influence could continue to drive the integration of crypto-related features or other innovations, albeit potentially with a more measured approach.
