Melbourne couple mistakenly gets $6.6 million, spends it, and now faces court in October. They thought it was a prize from Crypto(dot)com, but the company denies it.

A Melbourne couple (Thevamanogari Manivel and Jatinder Singh) received a surprising amount of 10.5 million Australian dollars (AUD), almost $6.6 million, by mistake in 2021. They will soon face court in October for spending this accidental fortune.

In 2021, Thevamanogari Manivel tried to put 100 AUD into her partner  Jatinder Singh's Crypto(dot)com account. Due to a mismatch between bank details, the couple got a refund. But instead of 100 AUD, they mistakenly received 10.5 million AUD.

The big error was found in December 2021 during an audit by the exchange. After the discovery, the court ordered the couple to return the money.

But, it was too late. They had already bought things like four houses, cars, and even moved 4 million AUD to a Malaysian bank. One house they purchased was worth 1.35 million AUD. This house was later ordered to be sold and the money given back.

In 2022, the couple said they thought they had won a prize from Crypto(dot)com. Singh remembered getting a message about a competition from them. But Michi Chan Fores from Crypto(dot)com said there was no such competition.

Recently, Manivel admitted her mistake in court and got an 18-month community work order. She had already been in custody for 209 days. Singh will have his court hearing on Oct. 23.
