What is Port Finance?
Port Finance (PORT) is a decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol launched in 2021, designed to facilitate lending and borrowing on the Solana blockchain. The project aims to provide users with efficient and secure access to liquidity, enabling them to earn interest on their assets or borrow against them. Operating on the Solana blockchain, Port Finance leverages its high throughput and low transaction costs to enhance user experience in the DeFi space. The native token, PORT, serves multiple functions within the ecosystem, including governance, where holders can participate in decision-making processes, and staking, which allows users to earn rewards for supporting the network. Port Finance stands out for its focus on optimizing capital efficiency and providing a user-friendly interface, positioning it as a significant player in the rapidly evolving DeFi landscape. Its innovative approach to lending and borrowing, combined with the scalability of the Solana network, contributes to its relevance in the cryptocurrency ecosystem.
When and how did Port Finance start?
Port Finance originated in September 2020 when the founding team released its whitepaper, outlining the project's vision for decentralized finance (DeFi) on the Solana blockchain. The project launched its testnet in October 2020, allowing early users to interact with the platform and provide feedback. Following successful testing, Port Finance transitioned to its mainnet launch in December 2020, marking its official public availability. Early development focused on creating a lending and borrowing protocol that leverages the speed and efficiency of the Solana network. The initial distribution of the Port Finance token (PORT) occurred through a fair launch model in January 2021, which aimed to ensure a broad and equitable distribution among users. These foundational steps established the groundwork for Port Finance's growth and its role within the DeFi ecosystem on Solana.
What’s coming up for Port Finance?
According to official updates, Port Finance is preparing for a significant protocol upgrade aimed at enhancing its lending and borrowing functionalities, scheduled for Q1 2024. This upgrade will focus on improving user experience and increasing the efficiency of capital utilization within the platform. Additionally, Port Finance is working on integrating with several decentralized exchanges to expand its liquidity options, with targeted completion by mid-2024. The team is also planning a governance vote to introduce new features that will allow users to have a greater say in the platform's development, expected to take place in early 2024. These milestones aim to improve overall platform performance and user engagement, with progress being tracked through their official communication channels.

Who is Port Finance designed for?
Port Finance is designed for developers and liquidity providers, enabling them to optimize and enhance their DeFi strategies. It provides essential tools and resources, including a user-friendly interface for creating and managing liquidity pools, as well as access to various financial instruments. The platform supports developers by offering APIs and SDKs that facilitate the integration of DeFi functionalities into their applications. Secondary participants, such as traders and investors, engage with Port Finance through liquidity provision and governance participation. They can stake tokens to earn rewards and influence the platform's development through governance mechanisms. This multi-faceted approach allows users to leverage the platform's capabilities while contributing to the overall growth and sustainability of the Port Finance ecosystem.
How is Port Finance secured?
Port Finance employs a robust security model based on the Solana blockchain, utilizing a Proof of History (PoH) consensus mechanism combined with Proof of Stake (PoS). In this framework, validators are responsible for confirming transactions and maintaining the integrity of the network. The PoH component provides a verifiable order of events, enhancing transaction finality and efficiency. For cryptographic security, Port Finance utilizes advanced techniques such as Ed25519 for digital signatures, ensuring authentication and data integrity. This cryptographic approach safeguards against unauthorized access and manipulation of transaction data. Incentives for participants are aligned through staking rewards, where validators earn rewards for their contributions to the network's security and performance. Additionally, the protocol incorporates slashing mechanisms to penalize malicious behavior, thereby discouraging actions that could compromise network integrity. Further enhancing security, Port Finance undergoes regular audits and employs governance processes that allow stakeholders to participate in decision-making, ensuring a resilient and adaptive network. The diversity of client implementations also contributes to the overall robustness of the system.
Has Port Finance faced any controversy or risks?
Port Finance has faced risks primarily related to the broader DeFi landscape, including vulnerabilities associated with smart contracts and liquidity pools. In early 2022, the platform experienced a security incident where a bug in its code led to the exploitation of funds, resulting in a loss of assets. The team responded promptly by pausing the affected contracts and conducting a thorough audit to identify and rectify the vulnerabilities. They also communicated transparently with the community about the incident and the steps taken to enhance security. To mitigate ongoing risks, Port Finance has implemented a series of measures, including regular security audits, a bug bounty program to incentivize external security researchers to identify potential vulnerabilities, and continuous monitoring of their smart contracts. Additionally, the project remains vigilant about regulatory developments in the DeFi space, ensuring compliance where necessary to protect users and maintain operational integrity.

What is Market depth?
Market depth is a metric, which is showing the real liquidity of the markets. Due to rampant wash-trading and fake activity - volume currently isn't the most reliable indicator in the crypto space.
What is it measuring?
It's measuring 1% or 10% section of the order book from the midpoint price (1%/10% of the buy orders, and 1%/10% of the sell orders).

Why it is important to use only 1% or 10%?
It's important, because measurement of the whole order book is going to give false results due to extreme values, which can make false illusion of liquidity for a given market.
How to use it?
By default Market depth is showing the most liquid markets sorted by Combined Orders (which is a sum of buy and sell orders). This way it provides the most interesting information already. Left (green) side of the market depth bar is showing how many buy orders are open, and right (red) side of the bar is showing how many sell orders are open (both can be recalculated to BTC, ETH or any fiat we have available on the site).

Confidence
Due to rampant malicious practices in the crypto exchanges environment, we have introduced in 2019 and 2020 new ways of evaluating exchanges and one of them is - Confidence. Because it's a new metric - it's essential to know how it works.
Confidence is weighted based on 3 principles:
Based on the liquidity from order books (75%) - including overall liquidity and market depth/volume ratio, volumes included, if exchange is low volume (below 2M USD volume 24h)
Based on web traffic (20%) - using Alexa rank as a main indicator of site popularity
Based on regulation (5%) - researching and evaluating licensing for exchange - by respective institutions
Adding all of these subscores give overall main result - Confidence
Confidence is mainly based on liquidity, because it's the most important aspect of cryptocurrency exchanges. Without liquidity there is no trading, illiquid markets tend to collapse in the long term. Besides liquidity - there is also an additional factor in calculation of score - market depth/volume ratio. If volume is huge (especially when it’s growing much faster than liquidity), and market depth seems to not keep pace with - it's reducing overall score. Exchanges that keep market makers liquidity with expanding volume are those that keep all ratios in-tact and have overall score above 75-80% (it means that they have all liquidity ratios above minimum requirements, high web traffic participation, and are often regulated).

Historical Market Depth is showing the history of liquidity from the markets for a given asset. It’s a measure of combined liquidity from all integrated markets on the coinpaprika’s market depth module.
