Empty Set Dollar (ESD)
What is Empty Set Dollar?
Empty Set Dollar (ESD) is a decentralized stablecoin protocol launched in 2020 by a community-driven team. It was created to provide a stable and decentralized currency that can maintain its value without relying on traditional collateralization methods. The project operates on the Ethereum blockchain, utilizing a unique algorithmic mechanism to adjust the supply of ESD in response to market demand, thereby aiming to keep its price stable relative to the US dollar. The native token, ESD, serves multiple purposes within the ecosystem, including governance, where holders can vote on protocol changes, and incentivization, where users can earn rewards for participating in the stability of the currency. ESD stands out for its innovative approach to stability through algorithmic adjustments rather than traditional backing, positioning it as a notable player in the decentralized finance (DeFi) space. This approach allows for a more flexible and scalable stablecoin solution, appealing to users seeking alternatives to fiat-backed currencies.
When and how did Empty Set Dollar start?
Empty Set Dollar originated in November 2020 when a team of developers released its whitepaper, outlining the project's vision and mechanics. The project aimed to create a decentralized stablecoin that would maintain its value through an elastic supply mechanism. Following the whitepaper release, the Empty Set Dollar testnet was launched in December 2020, allowing users to interact with the platform and provide feedback. The mainnet launch occurred in January 2021, marking the token's transition to a fully operational state. Early development focused on establishing a robust ecosystem that could support the token's unique features, including its governance model and liquidity incentives. The initial distribution of Empty Set Dollar tokens took place through a fair launch mechanism, which allowed participants to acquire tokens without the constraints of traditional fundraising methods like ICOs or IEOs. This approach aimed to foster a community-driven environment from the outset, laying the groundwork for the project's future growth and adoption.

How is Empty Set Dollar secured?
Empty Set Dollar utilizes a decentralized governance model that incorporates a unique consensus mechanism to secure its network. The protocol relies on a combination of algorithmic stability and collateralization, where the value of the stablecoin is maintained through a system of incentives and disincentives for participants. Transactions are validated by a network of participants who stake their assets, ensuring that they have a vested interest in the integrity of the system. The protocol employs cryptographic techniques, such as elliptic curve digital signature algorithm (ECDSA), to authenticate transactions and maintain data integrity. Incentives are aligned through staking rewards, where participants earn returns for locking up their assets, while penalties, or slashing, are imposed on those who act maliciously or fail to fulfill their obligations. This mechanism discourages dishonest behavior and promotes network stability. Additionally, Empty Set Dollar implements regular audits and has established governance processes to enhance security and resilience, ensuring that the protocol can adapt to potential vulnerabilities and maintain trust among its users.
Has Empty Set Dollar faced any controversy or risks?
Empty Set Dollar has faced risks primarily related to its algorithmic stablecoin model, which is inherently susceptible to market volatility and liquidity challenges. In early 2021, the project experienced significant price fluctuations that raised concerns about its stability and the effectiveness of its mechanisms to maintain peg. The team responded by implementing adjustments to the protocol, including changes to the collateralization strategy and governance mechanisms to enhance resilience against market pressures. Additionally, there have been discussions within the community regarding governance and decision-making processes, which can lead to disputes among stakeholders. The project has sought to address these concerns through increased transparency and community engagement initiatives. Ongoing risks for Empty Set Dollar include market volatility, regulatory scrutiny, and technical vulnerabilities typical of decentralized finance (DeFi) projects. To mitigate these risks, the team emphasizes regular audits, community feedback, and the development of robust governance frameworks to ensure the project's long-term viability and trustworthiness.

What is Market depth?
Market depth is a metric, which is showing the real liquidity of the markets. Due to rampant wash-trading and fake activity - volume currently isn't the most reliable indicator in the crypto space.
What is it measuring?
It's measuring 1% or 10% section of the order book from the midpoint price (1%/10% of the buy orders, and 1%/10% of the sell orders).

Why it is important to use only 1% or 10%?
It's important, because measurement of the whole order book is going to give false results due to extreme values, which can make false illusion of liquidity for a given market.
How to use it?
By default Market depth is showing the most liquid markets sorted by Combined Orders (which is a sum of buy and sell orders). This way it provides the most interesting information already. Left (green) side of the market depth bar is showing how many buy orders are open, and right (red) side of the bar is showing how many sell orders are open (both can be recalculated to BTC, ETH or any fiat we have available on the site).

Confidence
Due to rampant malicious practices in the crypto exchanges environment, we have introduced in 2019 and 2020 new ways of evaluating exchanges and one of them is - Confidence. Because it's a new metric - it's essential to know how it works.
Confidence is weighted based on 3 principles:
Based on the liquidity from order books (75%) - including overall liquidity and market depth/volume ratio, volumes included, if exchange is low volume (below 2M USD volume 24h)
Based on web traffic (20%) - using Alexa rank as a main indicator of site popularity
Based on regulation (5%) - researching and evaluating licensing for exchange - by respective institutions
Adding all of these subscores give overall main result - Confidence
Confidence is mainly based on liquidity, because it's the most important aspect of cryptocurrency exchanges. Without liquidity there is no trading, illiquid markets tend to collapse in the long term. Besides liquidity - there is also an additional factor in calculation of score - market depth/volume ratio. If volume is huge (especially when it’s growing much faster than liquidity), and market depth seems to not keep pace with - it's reducing overall score. Exchanges that keep market makers liquidity with expanding volume are those that keep all ratios in-tact and have overall score above 75-80% (it means that they have all liquidity ratios above minimum requirements, high web traffic participation, and are often regulated).
