Bridge Mutual (BMI)
What is Bridge Mutual?
Bridge Mutual (BMI) is a decentralized insurance platform launched in 2020. It was created to provide users with a way to protect their crypto assets against risks such as smart contract failures and exchange hacks. The project operates on the Ethereum blockchain, utilizing smart contracts to facilitate its insurance offerings and claims processing. The native token, BMI, serves multiple purposes within the ecosystem, including governance, where holders can vote on key decisions, and as a means to pay for insurance premiums. Users can also stake BMI tokens to earn rewards, further incentivizing participation in the platform. Bridge Mutual stands out for its unique approach to decentralized insurance, allowing users to become underwriters and earn premiums by providing coverage. This innovative model positions it as a significant player in the growing decentralized finance (DeFi) space, addressing the need for risk management solutions in the cryptocurrency market.
When and how did Bridge Mutual start?
Bridge Mutual originated in September 2020 when the founding team released its whitepaper, outlining the project's vision for decentralized insurance. The project launched its testnet in October 2020, allowing users to interact with the platform in a controlled environment. Following this, the mainnet was launched in December 2020, marking its initial public availability and enabling real transactions on the platform. Early development focused on creating a decentralized insurance marketplace that allows users to buy and sell coverage for various risks in the cryptocurrency space. The initial distribution of the Bridge Mutual token (BMI) occurred through a fair launch model in early 2021, which aimed to ensure a broad distribution among users rather than favoring early investors. These foundational steps established the groundwork for Bridge Mutual's growth and the development of its ecosystem.
What’s coming up for Bridge Mutual?
According to official updates, Bridge Mutual is preparing for a series of enhancements aimed at improving its decentralized insurance platform. Key milestones include the rollout of a new user interface and experience improvements planned for Q1 2024, which focus on making the platform more accessible and user-friendly. Additionally, Bridge Mutual is working on integrating with several DeFi protocols to expand its coverage options, with targeted partnerships expected to be announced in the coming months. These initiatives aim to enhance user engagement and broaden the scope of insurance products available on the platform. Progress on these developments will be tracked through their official communication channels and roadmap updates.

Who is Bridge Mutual designed for?
Bridge Mutual is designed for individual users and institutions seeking decentralized insurance solutions, enabling them to mitigate risks associated with cryptocurrency investments and smart contracts. It provides tools and resources, including a user-friendly platform for purchasing coverage and participating in insurance pools, to support users in managing their financial exposure. Primary users include retail investors and crypto enthusiasts who want to protect their assets against unforeseen events, such as hacks or failures of decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols. Institutions looking to offer insurance products or enhance their risk management strategies also benefit from the platform's capabilities. Secondary participants, such as liquidity providers and policy creators, engage through staking and governance mechanisms, contributing to the overall ecosystem while earning rewards. This collaborative environment fosters a robust insurance marketplace that aligns with the needs of both individual and institutional users.
How is Bridge Mutual secured?
Bridge Mutual employs a decentralized insurance model secured by the Ethereum blockchain, utilizing a proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus mechanism. In this framework, validators are responsible for confirming transactions and maintaining the integrity of the network. The protocol leverages cryptographic techniques such as ECDSA (Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm) for authentication and ensuring data integrity. To align incentives, participants can stake tokens to earn rewards, while the system incorporates slashing mechanisms to penalize malicious behavior or mismanagement of funds. This dual approach encourages honest participation and enhances the overall security of the network. Additionally, Bridge Mutual implements regular audits and has established governance processes to oversee protocol changes and risk management. The use of multi-client diversity further strengthens the network's resilience against potential vulnerabilities, ensuring a robust and secure environment for users engaging in decentralized insurance services.
Has Bridge Mutual faced any controversy or risks?
Bridge Mutual has faced risks primarily related to the decentralized finance (DeFi) space, particularly concerning the security of smart contracts and the potential for exploits. In early 2021, the project experienced a vulnerability in its smart contract that could have led to unauthorized access to user funds. The team promptly addressed this issue by implementing a patch and conducting a thorough audit of the affected contracts to enhance security measures. Additionally, Bridge Mutual operates in a regulatory environment that is continuously evolving, which poses ongoing risks related to compliance with financial regulations in various jurisdictions. The team has taken steps to mitigate these risks by engaging with legal experts and ensuring transparency in their operations. As with many blockchain projects, ongoing risks include market volatility and technical challenges associated with smart contract functionality. To address these, Bridge Mutual has established a bug bounty program to incentivize community members to identify vulnerabilities and has committed to regular audits to maintain the integrity of its platform.

What is Market depth?
Market depth is a metric, which is showing the real liquidity of the markets. Due to rampant wash-trading and fake activity - volume currently isn't the most reliable indicator in the crypto space.
What is it measuring?
It's measuring 1% or 10% section of the order book from the midpoint price (1%/10% of the buy orders, and 1%/10% of the sell orders).

Why it is important to use only 1% or 10%?
It's important, because measurement of the whole order book is going to give false results due to extreme values, which can make false illusion of liquidity for a given market.
How to use it?
By default Market depth is showing the most liquid markets sorted by Combined Orders (which is a sum of buy and sell orders). This way it provides the most interesting information already. Left (green) side of the market depth bar is showing how many buy orders are open, and right (red) side of the bar is showing how many sell orders are open (both can be recalculated to BTC, ETH or any fiat we have available on the site).

Confidence
Due to rampant malicious practices in the crypto exchanges environment, we have introduced in 2019 and 2020 new ways of evaluating exchanges and one of them is - Confidence. Because it's a new metric - it's essential to know how it works.
Confidence is weighted based on 3 principles:
Based on the liquidity from order books (75%) - including overall liquidity and market depth/volume ratio, volumes included, if exchange is low volume (below 2M USD volume 24h)
Based on web traffic (20%) - using Alexa rank as a main indicator of site popularity
Based on regulation (5%) - researching and evaluating licensing for exchange - by respective institutions
Adding all of these subscores give overall main result - Confidence
Confidence is mainly based on liquidity, because it's the most important aspect of cryptocurrency exchanges. Without liquidity there is no trading, illiquid markets tend to collapse in the long term. Besides liquidity - there is also an additional factor in calculation of score - market depth/volume ratio. If volume is huge (especially when it’s growing much faster than liquidity), and market depth seems to not keep pace with - it's reducing overall score. Exchanges that keep market makers liquidity with expanding volume are those that keep all ratios in-tact and have overall score above 75-80% (it means that they have all liquidity ratios above minimum requirements, high web traffic participation, and are often regulated).

Historical Market Depth is showing the history of liquidity from the markets for a given asset. It’s a measure of combined liquidity from all integrated markets on the coinpaprika’s market depth module.
