Swiss non-profit ZeroSync Association and Bitcoin infrastructure firm Blockstream have announced their plans to utilize zero-knowledge proofs (zk-proofs) to scale the Bitcoin blockchain. By broadcasting zk-proofs from Blockstream's satellite network, the two organizations aim to enable rapid syncing of Bitcoin nodes without the need to download the entire 500GB blockchain, reducing the time required from hours or days to mere fractions of a second. The experimental broadcast is expected to occur by the end of the year, making this innovative use of cryptography one of the hottest blockchain-tech trends in 2023.


Zero-knowledge proofs have gained significant attention in recent years for their ability to prove the validity of information without revealing the information itself. This cryptographic technique has the potential to revolutionize the way Bitcoin nodes validate transactions and maintain the blockchain's integrity. Currently, every Bitcoin participant must verify each transaction, a process that becomes increasingly resource-intensive as the blockchain grows. The newly-formed organization is committed to advancing the use of this cryptographic technique and bringing Bitcoin to a wider audience. ZeroSync co-founder Robin Linus said, "The security of Bitcoin requires every participant to verify every transaction. That didn't scale well until now. Proof systems like STARKs have been invented. Applying them to generate a proof of Bitcoin's chain state, and broadcasting it via satellite, can bring Bitcoin to almost everyone in the world. Don't trust, verify."


The successful implementation of zero-knowledge proofs in the Bitcoin blockchain will have several benefits. First, it will greatly reduce the time and resources needed to sync Bitcoin nodes, enabling more efficient and reliable verification of transactions.
