Base Hits 1 Billion Transactions Amid NFT Controversy
Base, Coinbase's Layer-2 network, celebrates 1 billion transactions but faces backlash over an NFT accused of copying a digital artist's work.
Base, Coinbase's Ethereum (ETH) Layer-2 network, recently hit a major milestone by completing 1 billion transactions since its launch in August 2023. This remarkable achievement, accomplished in just over a year, showcases Base’s rapid rise compared to networks like Bitcoin, which took over 15 years to reach similar numbers. However, the celebration was overshadowed by controversy surrounding an NFT commemorating the event.
On November 15, Base announced the milestone, highlighting its position as one of the fastest-growing Ethereum Layer-2 solutions. The network’s growth has been driven by Coinbase's strong support, branding, and resources. Reports indicate that Base is now the second most popular blockchain in 2024, surpassing competitors like Optimism and Arbitrum. Interest in Base has surged ninefold compared to its closest rival, solidifying its dominance in the Layer-2 ecosystem.
To mark the milestone, Base released a commemorative NFT. However, the design sparked accusations of plagiarism from digital artist Chris Biron, who alleged that the artwork copied his creation without giving him credit. Biron pointed out that Base had already earned over $36,000 from NFT sales at the time of his complaint. Biron criticized the network, noting the discrepancy between its corporate stature and its failure to acknowledge his work.
Base responded swiftly to the backlash. Jesse Pollak, Base's lead developer, issued a public apology, acknowledging that the artwork unintentionally mirrored Biron’s design. Base admitted the mistake, pledged to donate all proceeds from the NFT sales to Biron, and promised to refine its processes to prevent similar issues in the future. The network stated, "Creativity often draws from shared inspiration. While designing this piece, we unintentionally reflected another artist’s work without proper attribution. We’re sorry and will send 100% of the proceeds to Biron."
Biron expressed his gratitude for Base’s response, calling their actions a “class act” and commending the team for handling the matter respectfully.
Despite the controversy, Base’s accomplishment of reaching 1 billion transactions underscores its rapid expansion and significant role in the crypto ecosystem. Backed by Coinbase, Base continues to attract attention as a leading player among Ethereum Layer-2 networks.
