US, UK probe Garantex's $20B in crypto, eyeing sanctions evasion

The US and UK are investigating over $20 billion in crypto transactions connected to the Russian exchange Garantex, highlighting the global challenge of enforcing sanctions due to the Ukraine war.

Investigations are centered on Tether (USDT) transactions through Garantex, which was sanctioned in 2022, amid concerns it helped in illicit financial activities within Russia, despite the platform's claims of compliance.

Despite international efforts, Russia has circumvented financial sanctions using cryptocurrencies like Tether, illustrating the difficulty in monitoring these digital transactions' origins and intents due to their secretive nature.

After relocating its operations from Estonia to Moscow, Garantex is scrutinized for failing to meet anti-money laundering standards, with the US Treasury linking it to over $100 million in illicit transactions.

Tether's dual role in the crypto market is under the spotlight; its ease of use for quick, anonymous transactions makes it both a key asset and a target for misuse in the crypto space.

Tether Holdings asserts its dedication to transparency and cooperation with law enforcement, emphasizing the traceability of its transactions against the backdrop of its use in illegal activities.

The probe into Garantex and Tether's use in crypto crimes points to the need for enhanced regulations in the digital currency sector, balancing innovation with measures to prevent misuse.
