Telegram CEO Pavel Durov faces serious legal trouble in France, indicted for allegedly facilitating illegal transactions and failing to cooperate with investigations.

Pavel Durov, CEO of Telegram, has been indicted by a French court on serious charges, including allegedly facilitating illegal transactions. This development highlights the increasing legal pressure on both Durov and Telegram in France. The charges are severe, including accusations of complicity in the sale of narcotics and distribution of child pornography. Durov is also accused of not cooperating with French investigators, adding to his legal woes.

This investigation didn't start overnight. According to an August 26 press release, Durov has been under scrutiny since early July and has already faced questioning from French authorities. His arrest last week in France led to him being placed under judicial supervision, preventing him from leaving the country.

Adding to Durov's troubles, French authorities are also pursuing his brother, Nikolai Durov, with an arrest warrant. Nikolai, who is integral to Telegram’s operations, is believed to be involved in the same activities. Durov’s arrest immediately impacted the market, causing Telegram-linked cryptocurrency, Toncoin, to drop by nearly 20%. This shows how closely connected Telegram’s legal issues are with its financial ventures.

In addition to market effects, Telegram has faced operational challenges. The platform experienced several outages, with the most recent linked to heavy network traffic due to new token minting. Efforts to resolve these issues are ongoing, but they remain unresolved as of the latest reports.

This situation presents serious challenges for Telegram. Known for its strong stance on user privacy, the platform has attracted both regular users and criminal elements. As legal proceedings continue, the future of Telegram and its leadership remains uncertain, raising concerns about the responsibilities of tech companies in managing illegal activities on their platforms.
