Binance CEO Richard Teng calls for the immediate release of executive Tigran Gambaryan, citing inhumane treatment and worsening health in Nigerian detention.

The situation between Binance and Nigerian authorities has escalated as the health of Tigran Gambaryan, a detained executive, continues to worsen. His condition, deteriorating since contracting malaria in May, has raised concerns, with claims that authorities have refused to provide him with proper medical care.

Disturbing Video Highlights Treatment of Binance Executive

A new video has emerged showing Gambaryan in a weak state, struggling to move as he is escorted by guards. On Tuesday, Binance CEO Richard Teng criticized Nigerian authorities after the release of the video, which shows Gambaryan struggling to walk with crutches due to spinal issues. The guards refuse to assist him, despite his visible discomfort.

In the video, Gambaryan’s frustration is clear as he expresses his pain and exhaustion, repeatedly stating that he is innocent. He alleges that the guard escorting him was instructed not to help, despite the executive's deteriorating condition. Teng shared the video, calling the treatment “inhumane” and demanding Gambaryan’s immediate release so that he can return home for medical care.

The Binance community has rallied in support of Gambaryan, condemning his treatment. One member of the community called the situation “ridiculous,” while others questioned why the executive was being treated like a criminal. Some speculate that Nigerian authorities may be using Gambaryan as leverage against Binance, a claim Teng has also made.

Gambaryan’s Health Condition Raises Alarms

The health of Tigran Gambaryan has been a growing concern. After testing positive for malaria in May, it was reported that he collapsed in court on May 23. A judge ordered that he be transferred to a hospital for proper medical attention, but reports indicate that the necessary care has not been provided.

In late June, US representatives French Hill and Chrissy Houlahan visited Gambaryan and found that his condition had worsened. He had developed double pneumonia and lost significant weight. Despite a court ruling ordering his hospitalization, it appears that he was not taken to a medical facility, prompting US officials to call for his immediate release.

Legal Battle Over Bail on Medical Grounds

Gambaryan’s trial for money laundering resumed on September 2, 2024, and his legal team has applied for bail on medical grounds. His lawyers argue that his declining health condition, which now requires surgery, justifies his release on bail. However, the Economic and Financial Commission of Nigeria (EFCC) has opposed the request, filing an affidavit stating that his condition is “manageable” and not as severe as claimed.

The court has scheduled a hearing for the bail application on Wednesday, September 4. Gambaryan’s health and treatment remain a critical issue for his family, the Binance community, and various international advocates pushing for his release.
