Steem (STEEM)
What is Steem?
Steem (STEEM) is a cryptocurrency that operates on the Steem blockchain, designed to facilitate content creation and social interaction. It serves as a reward mechanism for users who contribute to the Steem platform by creating and curating content, effectively incentivizing engagement within the community. The Steem token is used for transactions, voting on content, and participating in the governance of the blockchain project, ensuring a decentralized ecosystem for social media and blogging.
When and how did Steem start?
Steem (STEEM) was launched in March 2016, created by Ned Scott and Dan Larimer, who are known for their work in the blockchain space. The platform was developed to reward content creators and curators on social media through blockchain technology. Steem gained significant attention with its initial listing on major exchanges like Bittrex shortly after launch, which helped to drive adoption. In 2018, the platform faced a notable event when it underwent a hard fork to enhance its scalability and features. The community has since evolved, with various developments aimed at improving user experience and engagement.
What’s coming up for Steem?
Steem (STEEM) is set to enhance its platform with upcoming roadmap updates focused on improving user experience and scalability. The next upgrade aims to implement features that will streamline content monetization and enhance community engagement, aligning with the platform’s goal of fostering a decentralized social media ecosystem. Additionally, the Steem community plans to expand its partnerships, potentially increasing use cases in content creation and decentralized applications. As Steem evolves, it looks to solidify its position as a leading blockchain for social interaction and content sharing.
What makes Steem stand out?
Steem (STEEM) is unique compared to other cryptocurrencies due to its innovative use of a delegated proof-of-stake (DPoS) consensus mechanism, which allows users to earn rewards for content creation and curation on its blockchain-based social media platform. This standout technology enables real-world use cases by incentivizing community engagement and content quality, distinguishing Steem from traditional cryptocurrencies that primarily focus on financial transactions. Additionally, its tokenomics allows users to convert their earned STEEM into other cryptocurrencies or fiat, enhancing its utility in the broader digital economy.
What can you do with Steem?
Steem (STEEM) is primarily used for rewarding content creators and curators on the Steemit platform, enabling users to earn and stake tokens for governance and platform decisions. It serves as a utility token for payments within the ecosystem and can also be utilized in various DeFi apps and NFT marketplaces built on the Steem blockchain. Additionally, users can participate in staking to enhance their voting power and influence over the network's development.
Is Steem still active or relevant?
Steem (STEEM) is currently active and still traded on various exchanges, maintaining a presence in the cryptocurrency market. Development is ongoing, with updates from the community and developers indicating continued support and enhancements. The project has not been deemed inactive or abandoned, as it still engages a dedicated user base and regular activity.
Who is Steem designed for?
Steem (STEEM) is built for content creators and consumers, targeting a community of bloggers, writers, and social media enthusiasts who seek to earn rewards for their contributions. It is ideal for users looking to engage in decentralized social networking, as well as developers interested in building applications on its blockchain. The platform fosters a vibrant ecosystem for both casual users and those looking to monetize their content.
How is Steem secured?
Steem secures its network using a unique consensus method called Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS), where stakeholders elect a limited number of validators, known as witnesses, to produce blocks and validate transactions. This model enhances network security by ensuring that only trusted participants maintain the blockchain, providing efficient and rapid processing of transactions while protecting against malicious activities.
Has Steem faced any controversy or risks?
Steem has faced significant controversies, including a notable security incident in 2020 when a vulnerability allowed hackers to exploit the network, leading to the theft of funds. Additionally, the platform has encountered legal issues related to governance disputes and the controversial acquisition by Justin Sun, which raised concerns about centralization and potential rug pulls. The extreme volatility of its token further poses risks for investors, making it essential to approach with caution.

What is Market depth?
Market depth is a metric, which is showing the real liquidity of the markets. Due to rampant wash-trading and fake activity - volume currently isn't the most reliable indicator in the crypto space.
What is it measuring?
It's measuring 1% or 10% section of the order book from the midpoint price (1%/10% of the buy orders, and 1%/10% of the sell orders).

Why it is important to use only 1% or 10%?
It's important, because measurement of the whole order book is going to give false results due to extreme values, which can make false illusion of liquidity for a given market.
How to use it?
By default Market depth is showing the most liquid markets sorted by Combined Orders (which is a sum of buy and sell orders). This way it provides the most interesting information already. Left (green) side of the market depth bar is showing how many buy orders are open, and right (red) side of the bar is showing how many sell orders are open (both can be recalculated to BTC, ETH or any fiat we have available on the site).

Confidence
Due to rampant malicious practices in the crypto exchanges environment, we have introduced in 2019 and 2020 new ways of evaluating exchanges and one of them is - Confidence. Because it's a new metric - it's essential to know how it works.
Confidence is weighted based on 3 principles:
Based on the liquidity from order books (75%) - including overall liquidity and market depth/volume ratio, volumes included, if exchange is low volume (below 2M USD volume 24h)
Based on web traffic (20%) - using Alexa rank as a main indicator of site popularity
Based on regulation (5%) - researching and evaluating licensing for exchange - by respective institutions
Adding all of these subscores give overall main result - Confidence
Confidence is mainly based on liquidity, because it's the most important aspect of cryptocurrency exchanges. Without liquidity there is no trading, illiquid markets tend to collapse in the long term. Besides liquidity - there is also an additional factor in calculation of score - market depth/volume ratio. If volume is huge (especially when it’s growing much faster than liquidity), and market depth seems to not keep pace with - it's reducing overall score. Exchanges that keep market makers liquidity with expanding volume are those that keep all ratios in-tact and have overall score above 75-80% (it means that they have all liquidity ratios above minimum requirements, high web traffic participation, and are often regulated).
