What is Streamr XDATA?
Streamr XDATA (XDATA) is a decentralized data streaming network launched in 2017 by the Streamr team. It was created to facilitate real-time data sharing and monetization, addressing the growing need for efficient data exchange in various applications, including IoT, finance, and analytics. The project operates on its own blockchain, utilizing a unique combination of peer-to-peer technology and decentralized protocols to enable secure and scalable data transmission. Its native token, XDATA, serves multiple functions within the ecosystem, including payment for data streams, incentivizing data providers, and facilitating governance decisions. Streamr XDATA stands out for its focus on real-time data monetization and its ability to connect data producers with consumers directly, eliminating intermediaries. This innovative approach positions it as a significant player in the evolving landscape of data economy, where privacy and control over personal data are increasingly important.
When and how did Streamr XDATA start?
Streamr XDATA originated in 2017 when the founding team, led by CEO Henri Pihkala, released its whitepaper outlining the vision for a decentralized data streaming platform. The project launched its testnet in early 2018, allowing developers to experiment with the technology and provide feedback. Following this, the mainnet was launched in 2020, marking the project's transition to a fully operational network. Early development focused on creating a robust infrastructure for real-time data sharing and monetization, aiming to empower users to control their data. The initial distribution of the XDATA token occurred through an Initial Coin Offering (ICO) in 2017, which helped fund the project's development and establish a community of early adopters. These foundational steps set the stage for Streamr XDATA's growth and the establishment of its ecosystem, which continues to evolve in the decentralized data space.

Who is Streamr XDATA designed for?
Streamr XDATA is designed for developers and data-driven businesses, enabling them to create decentralized applications that leverage real-time data streams. It provides essential tools and resources, including SDKs and APIs, to facilitate the integration of data into applications and services. This allows developers to build innovative solutions that utilize live data for various use cases, such as IoT, analytics, and real-time decision-making. Secondary participants, such as data providers and consumers, engage with the platform by sharing and monetizing data streams. This interaction fosters a collaborative ecosystem where data can be exchanged securely and efficiently. Streamr XDATA aims to empower users to harness the value of data while maintaining control over their information, ultimately contributing to a more decentralized and data-centric economy.
How is Streamr XDATA secured?
Streamr XDATA employs a decentralized consensus mechanism that ensures the integrity and security of transactions within its network. The protocol utilizes a variant of the Proof of Stake (PoS) model, where validators are responsible for confirming transactions and maintaining the overall health of the network. These validators are selected based on their stake in the network, which incentivizes them to act honestly, as their financial investment is at risk. To secure transactions and data integrity, Streamr XDATA incorporates advanced cryptographic techniques, including Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) for authentication. This ensures that all transactions are verifiable and tamper-proof. Incentive alignment is achieved through staking rewards, where validators earn rewards for their participation in the network, while slashing mechanisms are in place to penalize malicious behavior, such as double-signing or failing to validate transactions properly. Additionally, the network benefits from regular audits and a robust governance framework, which includes community participation in decision-making processes. This multi-faceted approach to security enhances the resilience of Streamr XDATA against potential threats and vulnerabilities.
Has Streamr XDATA faced any controversy or risks?
Streamr XDATA has faced some risks primarily related to the broader challenges of the blockchain ecosystem, including regulatory scrutiny and market volatility. In 2021, the project encountered concerns regarding data privacy and compliance with emerging data protection regulations, which prompted the team to enhance their governance framework and implement stricter data handling protocols. Additionally, like many blockchain projects, Streamr has to navigate the risks associated with smart contract vulnerabilities and potential exploits. The team has proactively addressed these concerns through regular audits and updates to their codebase, ensuring that security measures are in place to protect user data and assets. Ongoing risks include market fluctuations and regulatory changes that could impact the project's operations. To mitigate these risks, Streamr emphasizes transparency in its development practices and maintains an open line of communication with its community, ensuring that stakeholders are informed about any potential challenges and the measures being taken to address them.

What is Market depth?
Market depth is a metric, which is showing the real liquidity of the markets. Due to rampant wash-trading and fake activity - volume currently isn't the most reliable indicator in the crypto space.
What is it measuring?
It's measuring 1% or 10% section of the order book from the midpoint price (1%/10% of the buy orders, and 1%/10% of the sell orders).

Why it is important to use only 1% or 10%?
It's important, because measurement of the whole order book is going to give false results due to extreme values, which can make false illusion of liquidity for a given market.
How to use it?
By default Market depth is showing the most liquid markets sorted by Combined Orders (which is a sum of buy and sell orders). This way it provides the most interesting information already. Left (green) side of the market depth bar is showing how many buy orders are open, and right (red) side of the bar is showing how many sell orders are open (both can be recalculated to BTC, ETH or any fiat we have available on the site).

Confidence
Due to rampant malicious practices in the crypto exchanges environment, we have introduced in 2019 and 2020 new ways of evaluating exchanges and one of them is - Confidence. Because it's a new metric - it's essential to know how it works.
Confidence is weighted based on 3 principles:
Based on the liquidity from order books (75%) - including overall liquidity and market depth/volume ratio, volumes included, if exchange is low volume (below 2M USD volume 24h)
Based on web traffic (20%) - using Alexa rank as a main indicator of site popularity
Based on regulation (5%) - researching and evaluating licensing for exchange - by respective institutions
Adding all of these subscores give overall main result - Confidence
Confidence is mainly based on liquidity, because it's the most important aspect of cryptocurrency exchanges. Without liquidity there is no trading, illiquid markets tend to collapse in the long term. Besides liquidity - there is also an additional factor in calculation of score - market depth/volume ratio. If volume is huge (especially when it’s growing much faster than liquidity), and market depth seems to not keep pace with - it's reducing overall score. Exchanges that keep market makers liquidity with expanding volume are those that keep all ratios in-tact and have overall score above 75-80% (it means that they have all liquidity ratios above minimum requirements, high web traffic participation, and are often regulated).
