Near Protocol (NEAR)
What is Near Protocol?
Near Protocol is a blockchain project that operates as a cryptocurrency, specifically the Near Protocol token (NEAR). It is designed to facilitate the development of decentralized applications (dApps) and smart contracts, providing a user-friendly platform for developers and users alike. The Near Protocol aims to enhance scalability and usability through its unique consensus mechanism, known as Nightshade, which allows for high transaction throughput and low fees. As a blockchain-based asset, NEAR is used for governance, staking, and paying transaction fees within the Near ecosystem.
When and how did Near Protocol start?
Near Protocol was launched in 2020 and was founded by Alex Skidanov and Illia Polosukhin, who aimed to create a scalable and developer-friendly blockchain platform. The project gained significant attention after securing $21.6 million in a funding round led by prominent investors, including a16z and Pantera Capital. Near Protocol was initially listed on major exchanges, which helped to establish its presence in the competitive blockchain landscape and fostered early adoption among developers and users.
What’s coming up for Near Protocol?
Near Protocol is set to enhance its ecosystem with the upcoming release of its roadmap update, which focuses on scaling solutions and interoperability. The next upgrade will introduce sharding capabilities, aimed at improving transaction speeds and reducing costs, thus making it more efficient for developers and users alike. Additionally, the community plans to expand its decentralized finance (DeFi) offerings and increase support for non-fungible tokens (NFTs), fostering a vibrant marketplace. With these developments, Near Protocol aims to solidify its position as a leading platform for decentralized applications and drive broader adoption in the blockchain space.
What makes Near Protocol stand out?
Near Protocol (NEAR) stands out due to its unique sharding technology, which enables high throughput and scalability, allowing it to process thousands of transactions per second compared to many other cryptocurrencies. Its consensus mechanism, called Doomslug, provides fast finality and enhances user experience, making it ideal for real-world use cases like decentralized applications (dApps) and NFTs. Additionally, NEAR's developer-friendly ecosystem, with features like easy onboarding and low transaction fees, differentiates it from other blockchain platforms.
What can you do with Near Protocol?
Near Protocol (NEAR) is primarily used for payments and as a utility token within decentralized applications (dApps). Users can stake NEAR to secure the network and participate in governance decisions. Additionally, it supports DeFi apps and NFTs, enabling a vibrant ecosystem for various digital assets and services.
Is Near Protocol still active or relevant?
Near Protocol (NEAR) is currently active, with ongoing development and a robust community presence. It is still traded on various exchanges, reflecting healthy trading activity. The project continues to innovate, indicating it is not inactive or abandoned.
Who is Near Protocol designed for?
Near Protocol is primarily built for developers and businesses looking to create decentralized applications (dApps) with a focus on scalability and user-friendliness. Its target audience includes those in the DeFi space, as well as gamers and content creators, fostering a vibrant community of innovators and users seeking to leverage blockchain technology for various applications.
How is Near Protocol secured?
Near Protocol secures its network through a unique consensus mechanism known as Proof of Stake (PoS), where validators are responsible for validating transactions and maintaining the blockchain's integrity. This setup enhances network security by requiring validators to stake NEAR tokens, aligning their interests with the network's health and incentivizing honest behavior. Additionally, Near Protocol employs a sharding technique, which optimizes blockchain protection and scalability by distributing the validation workload across multiple shards.
Has Near Protocol faced any controversy or risks?
Near Protocol has faced scrutiny regarding its security, particularly after a notable hack in 2021 that resulted in significant losses for users. Additionally, the platform operates in a highly volatile market, posing inherent risks for investors, alongside ongoing discussions about regulatory challenges that could impact its future. While there have been no major allegations of rug pulls, the evolving nature of the crypto landscape necessitates vigilance against potential legal issues and security incidents.

What is Market depth?
Market depth is a metric, which is showing the real liquidity of the markets. Due to rampant wash-trading and fake activity - volume currently isn't the most reliable indicator in the crypto space.
What is it measuring?
It's measuring 1% or 10% section of the order book from the midpoint price (1%/10% of the buy orders, and 1%/10% of the sell orders).

Why it is important to use only 1% or 10%?
It's important, because measurement of the whole order book is going to give false results due to extreme values, which can make false illusion of liquidity for a given market.
How to use it?
By default Market depth is showing the most liquid markets sorted by Combined Orders (which is a sum of buy and sell orders). This way it provides the most interesting information already. Left (green) side of the market depth bar is showing how many buy orders are open, and right (red) side of the bar is showing how many sell orders are open (both can be recalculated to BTC, ETH or any fiat we have available on the site).

Confidence
Due to rampant malicious practices in the crypto exchanges environment, we have introduced in 2019 and 2020 new ways of evaluating exchanges and one of them is - Confidence. Because it's a new metric - it's essential to know how it works.
Confidence is weighted based on 3 principles:
Based on the liquidity from order books (75%) - including overall liquidity and market depth/volume ratio, volumes included, if exchange is low volume (below 2M USD volume 24h)
Based on web traffic (20%) - using Alexa rank as a main indicator of site popularity
Based on regulation (5%) - researching and evaluating licensing for exchange - by respective institutions
Adding all of these subscores give overall main result - Confidence
Confidence is mainly based on liquidity, because it's the most important aspect of cryptocurrency exchanges. Without liquidity there is no trading, illiquid markets tend to collapse in the long term. Besides liquidity - there is also an additional factor in calculation of score - market depth/volume ratio. If volume is huge (especially when it’s growing much faster than liquidity), and market depth seems to not keep pace with - it's reducing overall score. Exchanges that keep market makers liquidity with expanding volume are those that keep all ratios in-tact and have overall score above 75-80% (it means that they have all liquidity ratios above minimum requirements, high web traffic participation, and are often regulated).
