Western Union Turns Dollar Remittances Into Instant Visa Spending Power

Key facts

  • Western Union and Rain launched Stablecard, a USDPT-backed Visa card, on 4 August 2026.
  • The card goes live in 37 markets, with more than 60 planned by year-end.
  • USDPT is issued by Anchorage Digital Bank on Solana and redeems 1:1 for dollars.

Western Union and Rain launch a USDPT stablecoin card

On 4 August 2026, Western Union and payments platform Rain launched Stablecard, a digital wallet paired with a Visa secured credit card. The card lets users hold and spend USDPT, a US dollar stablecoin, anywhere Visa is accepted. Customers can add Stablecard to Apple Pay and Google Pay. They can also receive Western Union money transfers directly into a USDPT wallet.

"Stablecard represents the next step in making global financial services more accessible to our customers. By combining the stability of a dollar-backed digital asset with the scale of Western Union's global network and Visa's acceptance footprint, we're giving consumers a new way to hold value, move money and spend confidently across borders.", 4 August 2026. — Devin McGranahan, President and Chief Executive Officer, Western Union

USDPT is issued by Anchorage on the Solana blockchain

USDPT is issued by Anchorage Digital Bank on the Solana blockchain. Western Union says the token is redeemable 1:1 for US dollars and fully backed by reserves. Users can hold dollar value and send funds to compatible digital asset wallets and exchanges. The linked Visa card makes that balance spendable at merchant locations or automated teller machines (ATMs), online or in store.

Stablecard goes live across 37 markets at launch

Stablecard launched in 37 markets, including places where local currencies fluctuate and demand for stablecoins is visible. Western Union is targeting more than 60 markets by the end of 2026. The company designed the product for remittance receivers and everyday spenders who want more control over their funds. For receivers in unstable-currency markets, a dollar-backed balance protects money they have already earned. The Stablecard mobile app combines the USDPT wallet and the Visa card in a single experience, letting customers request and manage the card in one place.

Solana carries the settlement layer behind the card

Solana traded at $73.86 at the time of publication, down 0.19% over the past 24 hours versus the previous close (CoinPaprika, 6 August 2026). The network held a market capitalization near $42.9 billion, ranking seventh among tracked assets. USDPT, the token behind Stablecard, is built on Solana, which settles transfers between users and their linked cards.

Rain supplies the card and compliance infrastructure

Rain provides the enterprise infrastructure behind both the wallet and the card. The company is a Visa and Mastercard Principal Member and issues cards accepted at more than 175 million merchant locations across over 200 countries and territories. Rain says its technology lets partners move, store and use stablecoins through payment cards, on and off ramps, and cross-border rails. The company says it serves more than 100 organizations worldwide.

"Western Union is putting stablecoin efficiency in the hands of people who have never thought about onchain money and never need to. With Rain's enterprise infrastructure underneath both the wallet and card, users enjoy a modern experience that just works with all of the compliance and protections built in.", 4 August 2026. — Farooq Malik, CEO and Co-founder, Rain
