Shinhan Asset Management Signs MOU With Plume for Tokenized Fund

Key facts

  • Shinhan Asset Management signed an MOU with Plume to test a Korean won tokenized fund.
  • The pilot uses a won ultra-short-term bond fund and runs in offshore markets only.
  • Plume holds a US SEC-registered transfer agent license and joined a DTCC tokenization working group.

Shinhan and Plume sign MOU for tokenized fund

Shinhan Asset Management signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Plume, an open finance platform for institutional real-world assets. The two firms will build a proof-of-concept (POC) for a Korean won (KRW) tokenized fund. Shinhan announced the agreement on 14 August 2026. The deal targets offshore demand for won-denominated assets in an on-chain market built mostly around the US dollar.

Won bond fund backs the offshore pilot

Shinhan will provide a fund tied to won ultra-short-term bonds as the underlying asset. Plume will run the technical POC and test potential issues in offshore tokenization. The test covers whitelist-based transfer controls, on-chain mechanisms, and know-your-customer (KYC) and anti-money laundering (AML) systems. The pilot will run only in offshore markets. Contractual and technical blocks will exclude Korean residents from taking part. Shinhan describes it as the first attempt to apply institutional-grade infrastructure standards to Korean won assets.

Plume holds an SEC-registered transfer agent license

Plume holds a US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) registered transfer agent license. It recently joined the Digital Assets Solutions Industry Working Group run by the US Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation (DTCC). Shinhan Asset Management oversees about KRW 133.6 trillion, or around 100 billion US dollars, across public and private markets. It is the asset management arm of Shinhan Financial Group. Founded in 1996 and based in Seoul, the firm is a licensed investment manager regulated by Korea's Financial Services Commission.

MOU signals intent, not a commercial launch

The MOU confirms mutual intent to cooperate. It covers only the POC and does not commit either firm to issue or distribute a live product. Shinhan Asset Management plans to build capabilities for global tokenized financial products through the pilot. Any future issuance or distribution would follow later, within relevant laws and regulatory checks.
