Privacy and Quantum Defense Move to the Heart of Ethereum's Roadmap
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin published an updated protocol roadmap on 10 August 2026. It places quantum resistance and user privacy at the core, marking a shift from his 2023 plan where neither appeared.

Buterin puts quantum safety and privacy at the top
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin published an updated protocol roadmap on 10 August 2026. He set his original 2023 diagram side by side with the current "Strawmap," a working plan that maps upgrades through 2029. Privacy and quantum security did not appear in the 2023 version. Both now rank among the network's core long-term goals, which Buterin called "particularly new and intense areas of concern." He said the comparison showed how far the plan has moved. "What's most striking, however, is that some completely new things are in the strawmap that are NOT in this diagram," Buterin wrote.
Privacy pools and wormholes aim to hide user activity
The roadmap lists several tools aimed at user privacy. Privacy pools would hide user activity and account balances from public view. A design that Buterin calls "wormholes" would let people move value without exposing their full transaction history. He also listed keyed nonces, recent roots, and lean privacy pools among the mechanisms now under study. These features remain research proposals rather than finished products. Buterin has argued that weak default privacy is a problem for public blockchains.
FOCIL headlines the planned Hegota hardfork
Censorship resistance also features in the updated plan. Buterin pointed to FOCIL, short for Fork-Choice Enforced Inclusion Lists. He described parts of FOCIL as a headliner upgrade for Ethereum's planned Hegota hardfork. The mechanism is designed to make it harder for block producers to exclude valid transactions. That goal ties the privacy work to a broader aim of keeping the network open to all users.
Lean Ethereum could replace the network's core software
Buterin grouped many of these changes under the label Lean Ethereum. He described it as a catchall term for upgrades that could revise nearly every core piece of the protocol. In the long term, the plan could replace the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), the software environment that runs Ethereum applications, with formats such as RISC-V and leanISA. Buterin framed the shift as a way to simplify the protocol and to support formal verification, a method for mathematically checking that code behaves as intended. He summed up the direction in a short list of goals.
"Ethereum will be quantum-safe. Ethereum will put users' privacy first. Ethereum will be secure. Ethereum will be censorship-resistant. Ethereum will be highly performant and scalable while satisfying the above. And Ethereum will be Lean.", 10 August 2026. — Vitalik Buterin, Co-founder, Ethereum
Native rollups return as zero-knowledge tools mature
The Strawmap, last updated 4 August 2026, also adds native rollups. Buterin said zero-knowledge proofs, known as SNARKs, were not mature enough to include that idea in 2023. The updated plan deprioritises several older items, including verifiable delay functions and a range of EVM improvements. Blob and gas futures, absent from the 2023 diagram, now appear as well. The changes point to a plan shaped by tools that have advanced over the past three years.
Ether trades near $1,875 during the roadmap update
Ether (ETH), Ethereum's native token, traded at $1,875.05 at the time of publication, down 2.52% over the past 24 hours versus the previous close (CoinPaprika, 11 August 2026). Its market value stood near $225.8 billion, keeping it the second-largest cryptocurrency. The roadmap sets long-term protocol direction and does not target short-term price. Most of the listed upgrades remain plans without confirmed delivery dates.
