OKX Europe Adds One-Way USDT-to-USDC Conversion Under MiCA Rules

Key facts

  • OKX Europe now converts deposited USDT into MiCA-compliant USDC for users in 30 EU and EEA countries.
  • Tether lacks MiCA authorisation, prompting European platforms to restrict USDT support after the 1 July 2026 rollout.
  • USDT holds about $184 billion in market value; USDC holds about $73 billion.

OKX Europe opens one-way USDT-to-USDC conversion

OKX Europe has launched a one-way feature that lets customers deposit Tether's USDT and convert it into USDC. USDC ranks among the largest stablecoins cleared under the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework. The tool covers users across 30 EU and European Economic Area countries. Customers convert at their own discretion, rather than under a platform-imposed deadline. OKX Europe built the feature for users whose current platforms no longer accept USDT or plan to migrate balances automatically. The conversion is voluntary and does not force existing USDT balances to move.

MiCA rollout pushes platforms away from USDT

Tether has not obtained authorisation to issue USDT under MiCA. The European Union completed the framework's rollout on 1 July 2026. That shift prompted many European platforms to restrict USDT deposits, delist trading pairs, or convert customer balances into compliant tokens. Revolut, for example, set an 31 August deadline for USDT holdings across the EEA and Switzerland. Licensed platforms in the bloc can no longer offer non-compliant stablecoins to European users. Tether's chief executive, Paolo Ardoino, has criticised MiCA's stablecoin provisions, describing parts of the regime as risky for issuers and users.

USDT and USDC hold large market positions

USDT remains the largest stablecoin, holding roughly 59% of the nearly $310 billion stablecoin market. Its market value stands near $184 billion (CoinPaprika, 18 July 2026). USDC, the compliant alternative offered by OKX Europe, holds about $73 billion (CoinPaprika, 18 July 2026). Both tokens aim to track the US dollar at a one-to-one rate.

Conversion gives affected users a compliant path

The conversion gives affected holders a regulated route to keep dollar-pegged funds inside the European market. OKX Europe also lets eligible users swap USDT into other MiCA-compliant stablecoins, including USDG. The feature works in one direction only, so converted balances do not return to USDT. Users who face migration deadlines on other services can move their tokens to OKX Europe and convert them at any time.
