Microsoft venture arm backs AI startups and global infrastructure
Microsoft’s venture arm and startup programs now target AI builders while the company plans tens of billions in global AI infrastructure spending. These initiatives frame Microsoft as a central backer of AI startups and tools.

Microsoft venture fund structure and focus
Microsoft operates a corporate venture investment arm, known as M12, that backs software and artificial intelligence startups. The fund invests in early-stage technology companies, including artificial intelligence and enterprise software startups. This venture activity sits alongside the Microsoft for Startups program, which supports founders with tools and guidance. Together, these efforts position Microsoft as both investor and technical partner for early-stage software companies.
Startup programs targeting AI builders
Microsoft supports artificial intelligence startups through structured accelerator programs and curated communities. In 2026, the Microsoft AI Tech Accelerator Community runs with Venturelab for Swiss startups working on artificial intelligence software. The program offers mentoring, community sessions, and a final pitch to a Microsoft jury. The Microsoft for Startups initiative also focuses on making these founders “venture capital backable” through cloud credits, tools, and business support.
"We see this consistently in our work with founders in Microsoft for Startups, as well as through the perspective of M12, Microsoft’s venture fund.", 02 April 2026.

AI Builder as low-code AI tool
AI Builder is a low-code artificial intelligence capability inside the Microsoft Power Platform. It lets business users create and deploy AI models without advanced programming skills. These models process documents, classify data, or add generative text features into business applications. Users then connect these models to workflows in services such as Power Apps or Power Automate.
Large-scale AI infrastructure commitments
Microsoft has announced large financial commitments to expand global artificial intelligence infrastructure. A 2025 plan sets out 30 billion US dollars of investment in the United Kingdom between 2025 and 2028. Another 2026 announcement states that Microsoft is on pace to invest 50 billion US dollars by 2030 to bring artificial intelligence to countries in the Global South. Earlier commitments also target cloud and artificial intelligence capacity in Europe, supporting regional access to Microsoft’s computing resources.
