Hyundai Sends $20,000 in USDT Across US-Mexico Border on Avalanche
Hyundai Card moved $20,000 in USDT between Hyundai Motor's US and Mexico units on the Avalanche blockchain, settling in about seven minutes. The July 9 transfer was a live intercompany payment, not a test, and Hyundai plans a European pilot later this month.

Hyundai Card settles $20,000 stablecoin transfer on Avalanche
Hyundai Card, the financial arm of Hyundai Motor Group, moved $20,000 between the carmaker's United States and Mexico units using a stablecoin. Stablecoins are digital tokens designed to track the value of a currency, in this case the US dollar. The transfer ran on the Avalanche blockchain and used Tether's USDT. Hyundai Motor America converted dollars into USDT, sent the tokens on-chain, and the Mexico unit converted them back into US dollars. Hyundai Motor Group ranks as the world's third-largest carmaker by vehicle sales.
Seven-minute settlement replaces a multi-hour bank wire
The payment settled in about seven minutes. A conventional interbank transfer on the same route usually takes three to four hours, according to Hyundai Card. Moving the tokens on a public blockchain let the two units settle directly. The company said the approach aims to cut the cost and time of moving money between subsidiaries. Hyundai Card described the seven-minute result as a clear improvement over existing bank transfers. Hyundai Card handled the regulatory, legal and tax reviews for the transaction, which took place on 9 July 2026.
Live payment marks a first for a major Korean firm
Hyundai became the first major South Korean company to run this kind of internal stablecoin transfer as a live settlement. The proof-of-concept (PoC) supported a real intercompany payment between overseas entities, not a sandbox test. It moved actual funds rather than test tokens. Tether and Ava Labs, the team behind Avalanche, took part in the pilot. The work moved the group's cross-border payment system toward production readiness. The pilot showed the technology working under real compliance, legal and tax requirements.
European pilot will test USDC with Circle and Visa
Hyundai Card plans a European pilot later this month. The trial will test transfers in local currencies and measure foreign-exchange costs. It is expected to use USDC, the dollar stablecoin issued by Circle, with Visa as a partner. The follow-up would add a second stablecoin and a second major payments partner to the group's testing. Hyundai also intends to expand the project to more payment corridors and currencies over time.
