Cloudflare Hands AI Agents a Stablecoin Wallet to Pay for APIs
On 4 August 2026, Cloudflare launched Cloudflare Wallets and cloudflare.pay, programmable stablecoin wallets that let AI agents pay for APIs and online content. Owners set spending caps, approved merchant lists, and transaction size limits on each agent wallet.

Cloudflare gives AI agents a stablecoin wallet
On 4 August 2026, Cloudflare launched Cloudflare Wallets and a payment service called cloudflare.pay. The tools give artificial intelligence (AI) agents a stable identity and a wallet to buy services on their own. An agent can pay for application programming interfaces (APIs), data, AI inference, and online content without a conventional account, subscription, or shared API key. Cloudflare said the human owner keeps control of the money at every step. Users can reserve a wallet handle at cloudflare.pay from the launch date, and the company describes the product as a wallet for the agentic internet.
Two wallet types split control between people and agents
Cloudflare Wallets come in two forms. Account Wallets belong to the people and organizations that own Cloudflare accounts. Owners use them to add funds, delegate spending to agent wallets, and pull money back when needed. Virtual Wallets belong to the agents themselves and operate through API keys. Each Virtual Wallet can spend only within the permissions that its Account Wallet owner sets. The split lets one person fund a single wallet and then hand a restricted version to software. It keeps the human as the source of funds while the agent does the spending.
Owners cap spending and approve merchants
Every Virtual Wallet carries guardrails from the start. Owners can define a spending cap, an approved merchant list, and a maximum transaction size for each agent. An agent cannot exceed those limits on its own. Cloudflare described these controls as built in from the beginning rather than added later. The approach lets software transact automatically while a person still sets the boundaries. The controls aim to keep autonomous spending within a fixed budget.
The x402 protocol carries the micropayments
The wallets pay through the x402 protocol. This standard attaches small payments directly to web requests, so a buyer can send tiny sums that settle in under a second and carry negligible fees. Cloudflare developed x402 with Coinbase and helped launch the x402 Foundation in September 2025. The wallets act as the payment method for services behind Cloudflare's Monetization Gateway, along with other x402-compatible endpoints. That gateway lets a provider charge for any resource that sits behind Cloudflare.
USDC anchors the stablecoin market
Stablecoins carry the value in this system. USDC, the fifth-largest crypto asset by market value, traded at $1.00 at the time of publication. It held a market capitalization near $72.1 billion and 24-hour trading volume of about $11.1 billion (CoinPaprika, 5 August 2026). Dollar-pegged tokens like this let agents move small amounts across the internet at low cost.
Full wallet access arrives in the coming months
Wallet handle reservations open on the launch date. Cloudflare plans to add full wallet access in the coming months. That release will let users move funds on and off the wallet and issue Virtual Wallets to their agents. Until then, people can only claim a name at cloudflare.pay and wait for the payment features.
