Claude AI Helps Recover 5 BTC Lost in Wallet Since 2015
A user recovered 5 Bitcoin worth roughly $397,000 using Claude AI after the wallet was inaccessible since 2015. Claude debugged the btcrecover tool; it did not break Bitcoin's encryption.

User recovers 5 Bitcoin locked since 2015
A pseudonymous user known as Cprkrn recovered 5 Bitcoin (BTC) in May 2026. The wallet had been inaccessible since 2015 — a period of approximately 11 years. At the time of recovery, the 5 BTC were worth roughly $397,000, based on the Bitcoin price at that date.

Claude fixed a tool bug, not Bitcoin encryption
The user uploaded old computer files to Claude, an artificial intelligence (AI) assistant made by Anthropic. Claude identified a bug in a password recovery tool called btcrecover. This tool attempts to reconstruct forgotten wallet passwords. Claude did not break Bitcoin's cryptographic security. The recovery worked because an older version of the wallet file — created before the user changed the password — was found and decrypted with the original password.
Wallet remained dormant since April 2015
On-chain records confirmed that the recovered wallet had not moved funds since April 2015. Multiple sources reported the dormancy period as 11 years, not 10. The CoinPaper headline used "10 years," but the majority of corroborating outlets used "11 years." The blockchain transaction confirming the wallet sweep occurred on 13 May 2026.
Millions of Bitcoin remain permanently inaccessible
Hardware wallet manufacturer Ledger estimated that between 2.3 million and 3.7 million BTC are permanently inaccessible. Ledger cited research firm Chainalysis as the source for this range. This estimate was published in November 2025 and represents the most recent available figure. Ledger sells hardware wallets, which gives the company a commercial interest in publicising Bitcoin loss statistics.
