Boltz Shut Down Its Own Bitcoin Bridge After AI Attackers Outpaced Its Team

Key facts

  • Boltz suspended its non-custodial Bitcoin swap service indefinitely on 3 August 2026.
  • The company blamed automated, AI-assisted attacks that outpaced its ability to patch bugs.
  • Boltz said no user funds were at risk because its swaps are non-custodial.

Boltz halts Bitcoin swaps after months of attacks

Boltz, a non-custodial Bitcoin swap service, disabled its swaps indefinitely on 3 August 2026. The company said the shutdown followed months of automated, AI-assisted probing of its infrastructure. It took its systems offline early that morning, then confirmed hours later that swaps were paused "until further notice." Boltz routes trustless atomic swaps between Bitcoin's mainchain, the Lightning Network and the Liquid sidechain.

Attackers now outpace the team's patches

Boltz said the pause was not a response to a single incident but a steady pattern. It contained several exploits over recent months, yet the pace of attacks accelerated sharply in the final days before the shutdown. The company said it was "actively targeted by what appear to be multiple resourceful groups" while it raced to deploy fixes. It framed the shift as a structural problem for small teams defending open-source code.

"What we are seeing is a major paradigm shift for Bitcoin services operating on an open source stack, and it needs careful analysis. Do not expect swap services to resume shortly.", 3 August 2026. — Boltz, official statement

No user funds were at risk, Boltz says

Boltz said no user funds were ever at risk because its swaps are non-custodial. Users keep control of their assets through hashed timelock contracts that execute atomic swaps. Any losses from the contained exploits fell on Boltz alone, the company said, because it runs as a bootstrapped business. Those statements remain company claims, as Boltz has not published a technical incident report or an independent security review.

Wallets relying on Boltz lost swap access

The shutdown cut off the swap rails behind Lightning and Liquid features in several wallets. Bull Bitcoin warned that Lightning payments and Liquid-to-Bitcoin swaps would "fail without explanation" until it found a replacement. Aqua and Zeus reported similar disruptions and began searching for backup providers. According to DeFiLlama, Boltz held about $262,000 in total value locked before the pause.

Bitcoin price held steady during the outage

Bitcoin traded at $64,240 at the time of publication, up 0.8% over the past 24 hours against the previous close (CoinPaprika, 5 August 2026). The Boltz outage did not move the wider market. It landed during a difficult week for Bitcoin security, as a separate exploit of Coldcard hardware wallets drained roughly $100 million in Bitcoin since late July, according to multiple reports.

Boltz gives no timeline for restoring swaps

Boltz gave no date for reopening its swap service and told users not to expect a quick return. Its refund application programming interface (API) and support channels remain available for users who need to recover funds. The company said it would share another update after reviewing its options.
