What is penny stock?
Penny stock (PENNYSTOCK) is a type of cryptocurrency launched in 2023 by a team of developers focused on providing accessible investment opportunities. It was created to democratize trading by allowing users to invest in low-cost assets, which can potentially yield high returns. The project operates on a decentralized blockchain, enabling secure and transparent transactions. Its native token, PENNYSTOCK, serves multiple purposes, including facilitating trades, providing liquidity, and enabling governance within the ecosystem. Penny stock stands out for its focus on affordability and accessibility, positioning it as a significant player in the realm of low-entry investment options. This approach aims to attract a broader audience, including novice investors who may be hesitant to engage with traditional high-cost stocks.
When and how did penny stock start?
Penny stock originated in the early 1990s as a term used to describe low-priced shares of small companies, typically trading for less than $5 per share. The concept gained traction with the rise of over-the-counter (OTC) trading platforms, which allowed investors to buy and sell shares of companies that were not listed on major stock exchanges. This period saw an increase in the number of small companies seeking to raise capital through public offerings, often resulting in shares being priced at a fraction of traditional stocks. The initial development of penny stocks was characterized by a lack of regulatory oversight, which made them attractive to investors looking for high-risk, high-reward opportunities. However, this also led to concerns about fraud and manipulation within the market. As the internet became more accessible in the late 1990s, trading penny stocks became easier, further popularizing their use among retail investors. While the term "penny stock" has evolved, its roots remain tied to the early days of OTC trading and the desire for accessible investment opportunities in smaller, emerging companies.
What’s coming up for penny stock?
According to official updates, penny stock is preparing for a series of significant developments in the upcoming quarters. Notably, there is a planned integration with a major trading platform set for Q2 2024, aimed at enhancing liquidity and accessibility for investors. Additionally, a governance proposal is scheduled for discussion in Q3 2024, which will focus on community-driven initiatives to improve user engagement and decision-making processes. Further, the project is set to release a new feature that enhances trading analytics by Q4 2024, designed to provide users with better insights into market trends and performance metrics. These milestones aim to improve overall user experience and market presence, with progress tracked through the official roadmap and community updates.

Penny stock distinguishes itself through its unique market positioning, primarily focusing on low-priced shares that are often overlooked by mainstream investors. This niche allows for significant volatility and potential for high returns, attracting speculative traders. The ecosystem surrounding penny stocks often includes various trading platforms and brokerage services that cater specifically to retail investors. These platforms may offer tools for tracking price movements, volume, and market sentiment, enhancing the trading experience. Additionally, penny stocks often have a diverse range of sectors, from technology to biotech, allowing investors to explore various opportunities. Governance in the penny stock space is generally less formalized compared to larger companies, with many stocks being driven by individual company performance and market trends rather than centralized decision-making. Who is penny stock designed for?
Penny stock is designed for retail investors and traders seeking high-risk, high-reward opportunities in the stock market. This audience typically includes individuals looking to invest smaller amounts of capital in hopes of significant returns, often in emerging or volatile companies. Penny stocks appeal to these investors due to their low price points, which allow for the purchase of large quantities of shares. The project provides resources such as educational materials and trading platforms to help users navigate the complexities of investing in penny stocks. Additionally, it offers tools for tracking stock performance and market trends, enabling users to make informed decisions. Secondary participants, such as market analysts and financial advisors, engage by providing insights and recommendations, contributing to the overall understanding and accessibility of penny stocks for retail investors. This ecosystem fosters a community where users can share experiences and strategies, enhancing their investment journey.
How is penny stock secured?
Penny stock utilizes a Proof of Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism, where validators are responsible for confirming transactions and maintaining the integrity of the network. In this model, participants stake their tokens to become validators, which incentivizes them to act honestly, as their staked assets are at risk. The protocol employs cryptographic techniques such as Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) to ensure secure authentication and data integrity. To align incentives, the network offers staking rewards to validators for their participation in the consensus process. Additionally, a slashing mechanism is in place, imposing penalties on validators who act maliciously or fail to validate transactions correctly. This discourages dishonest behavior and enhances the overall security of the network. Further safeguards include regular audits and a robust governance framework that allows stakeholders to participate in decision-making processes. The diversity of client implementations also contributes to the resilience of the network, ensuring that it can withstand potential vulnerabilities and attacks.
Has penny stock faced any controversy or risks?
Penny stocks have faced significant risks and controversies primarily related to regulatory scrutiny and market volatility. These stocks, often characterized by low prices and market capitalizations, are susceptible to manipulation and fraud, leading to concerns from regulatory bodies like the SEC. Incidents of pump-and-dump schemes have been particularly prevalent, where the price of a stock is artificially inflated before being sold off by perpetrators, leaving unsuspecting investors with losses. In response to these risks, regulatory measures have been implemented to enhance transparency and protect investors. For instance, the SEC has increased its oversight of penny stock transactions and has established rules requiring more disclosure from companies. Additionally, some trading platforms have instituted stricter guidelines for trading penny stocks to mitigate risks associated with illiquidity and volatility. Ongoing risks for penny stocks include market fluctuations and the potential for regulatory changes that could impact trading practices. Investors are encouraged to conduct thorough due diligence and remain aware of the inherent risks associated with investing in this segment of the market.

What is Market depth?
Market depth is a metric, which is showing the real liquidity of the markets. Due to rampant wash-trading and fake activity - volume currently isn't the most reliable indicator in the crypto space.
What is it measuring?
It's measuring 1% or 10% section of the order book from the midpoint price (1%/10% of the buy orders, and 1%/10% of the sell orders).

Why it is important to use only 1% or 10%?
It's important, because measurement of the whole order book is going to give false results due to extreme values, which can make false illusion of liquidity for a given market.
How to use it?
By default Market depth is showing the most liquid markets sorted by Combined Orders (which is a sum of buy and sell orders). This way it provides the most interesting information already. Left (green) side of the market depth bar is showing how many buy orders are open, and right (red) side of the bar is showing how many sell orders are open (both can be recalculated to BTC, ETH or any fiat we have available on the site).

Confidence
Due to rampant malicious practices in the crypto exchanges environment, we have introduced in 2019 and 2020 new ways of evaluating exchanges and one of them is - Confidence. Because it's a new metric - it's essential to know how it works.
Confidence is weighted based on 3 principles:
Based on the liquidity from order books (75%) - including overall liquidity and market depth/volume ratio, volumes included, if exchange is low volume (below 2M USD volume 24h)
Based on web traffic (20%) - using Alexa rank as a main indicator of site popularity
Based on regulation (5%) - researching and evaluating licensing for exchange - by respective institutions
Adding all of these subscores give overall main result - Confidence
Confidence is mainly based on liquidity, because it's the most important aspect of cryptocurrency exchanges. Without liquidity there is no trading, illiquid markets tend to collapse in the long term. Besides liquidity - there is also an additional factor in calculation of score - market depth/volume ratio. If volume is huge (especially when it’s growing much faster than liquidity), and market depth seems to not keep pace with - it's reducing overall score. Exchanges that keep market makers liquidity with expanding volume are those that keep all ratios in-tact and have overall score above 75-80% (it means that they have all liquidity ratios above minimum requirements, high web traffic participation, and are often regulated).

Historical Market Depth is showing the history of liquidity from the markets for a given asset. It’s a measure of combined liquidity from all integrated markets on the coinpaprika’s market depth module.
